So I thought I'd start a thread for the firmware update that asstreg noticed on the Update Tool today. As I mentioned in the 2.2 thread, I have noticed some speed improvements with animation speed, application opening speeds and the appearance of two new applications - Backup Assistant and Corporate Calendar. So once some other people get it up and running I'd like to figure out what else appears to have changed.

Speed improvements? Application appearance? That sounds like a major update. What are you implying?
[from wswartzendruber] -

It's definitley not 2.2 because the OS is still 2.1-update1, and the speed improvements aren't huge - the device just seems overall less laggy.

Sorry about the double post. (joys of using an iBook). So here's the step by step for Windows 7. 1. Go to http://www.lg.com/us/support/mc-suppo... and download the updater. 2. Install the update program. 3. Once the program opens select the "Install USB Driver" button. On your phone under settings->about phone->status you can find your MEID. Put that into the appropriate search field and download and install the drivers to your computer. 4. While Drivers are downloading and install, on your phone go to Settings->Applications->Development check USB debugging and Stay Awake. 5. Power off the phone and remove the SD Card. Power phone back on. 6. Once all the drivers have installed connect the phone to you computer. Use one of your rear USB ports. The front ports do not have as stable of voltages and will drop the connection. 7. You may have to select the "Start Update" button, I did not. 8. Find something to do for the next 20 min while the update downloads and installs.

The update worked great for me, too. I've had the phone for about a week and a half, and I've been frustrated by a finicky back button (lower left corner of touch screen). It seems like the update made the screen more responsive to touch and the back button is much more solid. As you've said, it's pretty minor, but I like it a lot so far. Ken

Thanks for the guide, gnd, I was having the usb driver loop problem too. Only took about 15 minutes to install the update. Like others have mentioned, the ThinkFree app changed a bit and there is a new corporate calendar app. Still can't add a Facebook account to the contact sync and the weather app still has the time bug. I'll post my findings on battery life as I use it. So far, I haven't seen any difference in the performance of the phone.

Well I can't say this is due purely to the update as I have installed LauncherPro since the update but i am now able to have the phone run Stable with 95-97mb free RAM. Also, I had my phone side by side with my wife's I had 4 bars of service while she had 3 I also had 3G coverage and she did not. So, it appears that it did help with signal reception.

Is anyone having trouble with the update? I tried to do it last night and this morning with no luck. I get the update tool and usb drivers installed properly, but when I click the Start Update button, it tells me to disconnect the phone so it can update the USB drivers and then it just sits there. After about 10 minutes, a message pops up saying it can't connect to the server.

Meh, maybe they're playing around with their builds to assess the possibility of 2.2. Then again, maybe they're not. Whatever. I'm starting to get annoyed by everyone's lack of vision on phones. I posted on the Gentoo Forums, "Hey guys, I just got a great deal on this thing called the Ally for $50 and no increase to my plan!" You know what they said? "OMG, n00b! You should've gotten the Incredible for $5322,22,222.23422 because it has sex wit j00!!!!!" Lame.

Hi all from a techie of years gone by (TRS-80 anyone?).
I tried this for several hours last night and finally made it past the "USB Driver Loop". I found that timing is critical with killing and restarting the internet connection.
With the internet connection live, start the Mobile Update program and let it determine that an update is available - then, when directed, connect your phone but kill your internet connection while the phone is communicating with the PC (before the USB Driver download window opens).
If you timed it correctly, you should then see the upgrade button on the bottom of the app. screen, and when you click it, it should start up a new update application (if you have been stuck in the USB loop you will immediately recognize the fact that you are now making forward progress).
Once this new app starts working (communicating with your phone) get your internet connection back on-line (before this new app attempts to communicate with the LG servers otherwise it will fail) and you will be off to the races.
** You still need to make sure the phone is setup as described in earlier posts, this is just to get past the USB loop.
Good Luck!

Weird. Timing wasn't that critical for me to resolve the loop. Then again, I'm not from the Trash-80 era.

I was able to get the upgrade after about 15 minutes fighting with the driver loop. Using the phone today my battery life has not improved, the phone is still laggy, the facebook app was hosed, and when running more than one app the phone would still freeze. I actually done a reset just to get the phone to operate normally again. And yes I am sure the phone was updated as the SW Version is now VS740ZV9 and I have the new apps. So I'm not really impressed so far.

Nice to know a reset will undo the update in case I have problems with it. So far so good though. Can't say as I noticed any improvement, but it didn't do anything bad either. The phone still runs as flawlessly as it did before. The one thing I don't like were the two added apps because I will never use them and they cost me about 3mb of space on the phone itself.

Hopefully the update don't kill root access for people that didn't root before the update. I for one am rooted, and i hope that i can avoid the update if it kills root. There is no update that will help this phone as much as root access does.

I just wanted to post a little update on how the firmware update has been working for me. I exoerienced several force closes, a couple of reboots, and the wifi completely quit. I did a faqctory reset and all seems normal for now. Based on my experience I would advise waiting to update your phones.

Just a quick update with my update experience. I can no longer use Skype. I went to Verizon as well as Skype website. The links sent to my phone return 404. Searching the Market and App Brain for Skype returns no results. My phone is still laggy but is running some faster when a running app isnt the primary operation. At this point I am regretting the update and really beginning to regret the purchase of the Ally. And still may return it before my 30 days as I'm on my second Ally and still having issues. I doubt we will get 2.2 but still will wait a week or so for a final word.

I advise everyone to stay away from this update. Not because of what the update does to the phone, but because of what the update software does to the computer. Some of the USB drivers coudln't be removed due to missing DLLs. I am going through my registry manually removing references to them.

There should be about 108MB of user available space, so I'm sure some of that is used by OverHead, but It should be okay.

Sorry to hear your report... Again I wouldn't recommend that anyone update there Allys yet!!
The Update is permanent, it can't be undone! Not even a Hard reset will erase the update... That's not a good thing for a Software version we are not sure of.
I would wait until I can get some more information on a OFFICIAL Release.

The only thing that concerns me is the fact that an update that 'shouldn't be mentioned' was pushed through the Support Tool' at all. It's end-user software, so somebody must have pushed it through for the end-user in the first place. Things like this don't just appear for no reason >_>

Agreed it shouldn't have happened. That's why we made such a big deal out of this, internally. We have identified the breakdown in procedures and it has been fixed... Unfortunately too late to have prevented this from getting to some of the Ally Users.
Just so others know... the Update wasn't pushed through the support tool. In my mind 'Pushed' implies that we 'sent the updates to phones through the Update tool.
It was one of our Genius Forum members who figured out that it was there and what had to be done to get it... If an Everyday User would have stumbled across the Updater Utility they would have never known an update was available. You had to find the tool, then properly configure your phone to see the update, let alone Download and install it.
But the point that it shouldn't have been there in the first place is well taken and the process has been remedied, and I'm still frustrated! :-)
All future Ally software released will be updated Over the Air.

This is actually an Excellent question, most people don't know where to find there phone info.
GoTo Settings>> About Phone>> Next scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen and you should see the Software Version "SW Version" under the heading it will say "VS740ZV6" Meaning the Ally is model # VS740 and you are running ver 6 or 8.... The list digit is the version.

Thanks LG Product Pro. Your posts have been very helpful. I was able to update to V9 and yes, I can see how regular users would not be able to download it, I agree it should only be available OTA so that everyone is on the same page. The phone seems to work fine or better with V9 accept for the issue of some apps like Skype no longer available for download My 3 questions at this point are: 1) Is V9 a real realease or some beta version of sorts that will not be supported? 2) Am I ok to stay with V9 and will updates past V9 work ok on my phone? 2) Is there a reason why would some apps not able available, like Skype and others, and what needs to be done so that I can get those downloads. I contacted one of the App vendors that I can no longer download and they told me its because they don't yet support 2.2, so is there some sort of a signature in V9 (i.e. firmware 2.1 update1?) that is not letting me download some apps? Thanks again for all the great posts!

The Updates are rolled out through Verizon and I'm not sure what there schedule is for each region. Did you by chance get prompted to update and then accidentally Dismiss it? If you haven't been prompted to update yet, it should happen at anytime...
What I would do would be to contact Verizon support to see if they can tell you whether your Region has been updated yet.... There isn't a way to "Initiate" the update from your end.

1: Since 'V9' is out in the field, I feel confident that the next version will be higher number like 10, 11 or so on.
2: I feel that v9 is just like ver 8 but with a different Revision #... I haven't seen any difference, so ver 9 should work just like v8... If not, they would have given us a heads up. Yes it won't cause any issues as far as warranty or support goes... Support is aware that there are a few phones out there with Ver 9 (Like Mine)
3: Skype? Yeah it was there and now?? The Skype page for Ally is even missing. I'm wondering if it was a contractual issue. Maybe that's why it isn't there any more. I can't find it in Verizon's media store any longer, even looking for other Android Devices. I'll check into this as well.
Thanks for the Posts!

I called Verizon customer service and they contacted one of the stores, and based on the "manager" I am guessing at the store, they said that LG Update is "3rd" party update that voids the warranty, but I can go to my local store and it will be the store that will make the decision (at least this is what I was told). If you do a little research you will find that you don't need a Task Killer app. When the avail RAM gets low the Android OS will auto kill unused apps and processes until it has the RAM it needs. Linux has much better memory management than Windows does. Task killers can actually cause slowing since apps use services from the phone and other apps. If you've killed that service then the OS has to reload that service and the app you are opening. This causes slowing and worse kills the battery faster.

Well I'm sorry to report that I replaced the Ally with the original Droid. I took a trip this past weekend and the phone rebooted at least 8 times over a 3 day time frame. And when I would charge the phone it would over heat and have a ? over the battery symbol and on the lock screen it says to connect the charger. I was on my 3rd phone so I deemed it an unacceptable phone and had to make a decision before the 30 day plus 2 week warranty. I hope you guys do get the 2.2 update and I hope it fixes the phone. I do miss the keyboard and the form factor but a more stable phone was needed.

Well unfortunately this is NOT for the Ally because I went there and it says update not available. the LGVS750 is the Fathom.
