enV3/Touch T9 Word input questions

Hello, I have recently purchased an enV3. Due to problems with my VZW account, I cannot activate it for a few days. Anyway, I understand that the T9 word input method no longer memorizes words. While there are a lot of irate users, I am simply curious - was this intentional, and if not, will it be fixed? I'm just wondering, word memorization is not going to be fixed/added, I would prefer trading in the enV3 for another model that supports fully functional T9 (probably a VX8360) before it is too late. Thank you for your time.

I would like to know as well. I think this question very much deserves an answer. This phone is a messaging phone, but it lacks such a seemingly obvious feature. If this T9 problem was an accidental omission that will be fixed in the future I think many env3 users will be much less upset. However, if this was intentionally left out and will not be fixed I believe that I will be joining many who will be returning their phone.

This is a horrible mistake by LG. If I had know that this feature was left out then I would have most certainly purchased the Alis 2 over this piece of crap! Irate doesn't even begin to describe how this phone makes me feel. Never again will I EVER purchase an LG phone. Also, I have told everyone that I can that they should stay clear of the enV Touch and the enV3 if tey EVER plan on sending a txt message. The T9 on these two phones are leagues behind the basic flip phone that I purchased 4 years ago. LG should be embarrassed to ever release such a horrible phone as the enV TOUCH.

I already returned mine b/c of the incompetence of LG to address this issue. The LG dude has ignored ALL posts concerning this for almost a month now. I will never purchase another LG again. They simply could care less about their customers. They have offered absolutely no explanation about this blunder. T9 is a complete disaster on this phone!

The really sad thing is that they have known about this since they introduced the problem back around November 2008 after they released a firmware update to the chocolate2 where the T9 was broken. VZW made LG aware of this in December 2008, and THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING! Now here we are with two new phones( actually 3 ) heavily marketed as messaging phones with a simple fundamental feature crippled!

It sure would be nice if LG would address this concern with their customers instead of ignoring every post concerning this!

BUT I SUGGEST THAT YOU TAKE THE STUPID POS BACK B/C LG WILL NOT ADDRESS THIS AND THEY DON'T CARE!

"stay clear of the enV Touch and the enV3 if tey EVER plan on sending a txt message" Gee, the keyboard is pretty is pretty damn nice, as well as the 'just start typing to Reply' feature. 'Piece of crap' ? Really? I can assure you that this kind of flaming well get you nowhere. The Touch has barely been out a month. New firmware releases don't happen over night. Why don't you wait for the first update before you go off! mx

I think the internal keyboard was a step back from the one on the voyager. Typing on it is much more cumbersome, now I do have big hands and that might be a part of it. But I loved the way the voyager keyboard felt, and never even open my touch to use any internal functions. But I am with everyone else on not saving the t9 words that is just dumb. Plus mine never saves t9 as the default txt entry mode. Some times it will be abc again and sometimes it will say t9 and wont be.

I am surprised about how long LG has known about this T9 issue and have yet to release a fix. I read about how to teach the phone words you would want T9 to know (type in "Abc" and then select "T9" when you are done typing the word), but eventually the phone unlearns the word within the T9 feature. Maybe somebody knows how to get into the T9 of the operating system to add words (which we should not have to do), but presently I do not know if this is possible. Also, with regards to Sydman's issue at the end of their post - my phone too has several times said it was in T9 mode on the touch screen, and it was really in Abc mode. In all I like the phone, but there are more than several problems with it. /high fives LG for releasing a great phone... with issues.

this is also a problem with the new LG Glance phone. its very agrevating when you were used to it on a previous phone. one of the main reasons i stuck with an LG is because i liked the controls and it was easy to use.. going backwards doesnt make any sense at all!

"SURPRISED IN THE INCOMPETENCE OF THE LG PRODUCT NOOB " So, do you think your flaming is going to generate a faster response? Not gonna happen! In addition, your post offers no useful information. Has it occurred to you that the ' PRODUCT NOOB' has other issues on his/her plate? Or that LG is actually looking into this issue (as well as several others) an contemplating a solution ... at which time new information will be posted? In the engineering process, firmware changes don't happen overnight Believe it or not, the current set of state of the art cell phones are small computers that happen to include voice (and more) communication capabilities, which relatively complex firmware/software to make all of these cool features happen. While I agree with you on the anti-flaming, I disagree with you on this part of your post. The phones were released barely 2 months ago.. but this feature has been included since the first LG phone I ever owned.

I'm rather surprised that there is still no official word on this matter. My 30 days are up, and I have not traded my phone for the 8360. I'm a bit worried that I should have, since LG seems to be avoiding this issue.

Why in the world would you bother to use a T9 for text entry when there is a QWERTY available on the phone? I would think this would sort of make T9 learning/entry a non-issue. If LG left this feature out on purpose I suspect this may have been their reasoning. I don't know but it makes sense to me. I guess some folks need one-handed entry or maybe just don't want to change? Also, I do believe Verizon has the final say on whether the software update for the phone can be discussed publicly. M

Full T9 functionality has been included on both previous iterations of the enV, so it's inexcusable that it would be omitted on this version. I use T9 frequently for quick replies. The enV3 is one of verizons better phones - there's no reason that a free phone with a sub QVGA resolution should have better T9 support than it does.

In addition, the enV3 and the enV touch aren't the only phones being overlooked here. I've heard that the Glance is missing this functionality as well, and that phone doesn't have a qwerty board.

And yes, your final point is valid, but it's still very odd that LG has been skirting and avoiding this issue since the release of the phone.

I have to agree. I cannot see the point of T9 when you have a full blown QWERTY keyboard ... especially with the instant reply feature. You touch a message, read ... open phone to expose keyboard ... and start typing. That's pretty quick as I see it.

Database, is the instant reply feature something I have to activate? When I'm reading a message on the touch screen and then I open the phone to expose the physical keyboard and I start typing, nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

It appears that they have accidentally or knowingly disassociated the T9 user input DB with the T9 feature. I loaded up bitpim and added a few T9 words that way and even after adding then and then trying to type them into a message they still do not appear. So maybe you folks over there at LG should take a look into that and try to get this feature back up and running. Thanks JD

Found a temporary (at least i hope) way to get the words to add themselves to the T9 DB. You have to use the word in ABC mode a few times then when u switch to T9 it will be in there. Don't Know for how long but i tried it just now and it worked that way. ill shut phone off and see if it saves the word. Another problem i noticed with the T9 is when you finish typing a word. if the word isn't selected anymore and you go back to the word to change it by hitting next it won't work. you have to delete the entire word and retype it then hit next to change it. for example typing the word wasn't when you enter wasn't it shows wasm't and when u hit next to change it to next word it only changes the ('t). That something else you might want to look into Thanks Again JD

I can't agree with this. Regardless of the reason, there are many dissatisfied customers who expected the usual inclusion of T9 word with an expandable dictionary. I, for one, use the front screen often. Sometimes I need to be able to input text one handed, and sometimes I just prefer to.

Saying that the T9 issue is a non-issue due to the qwerty keyboard is just ridiculous. T9 has been included on both previous enV models. In addition,

it has been excluded on the LG Glance as well, a phone without a qwerty keyboard.

I am very disappointed with the way LG as a company is dodging any T9 complaints. After multiple pointless emails, I came to this forum hoping that the LG Product Pro or an LG employee or similar could offer some insight to this issue, though I appear to have been wrong.

I also think that this thread should stay more on topic - regardless of whether the phone has a qwerty board or not, a vital feature has been omitted for seemingly no reason.

I been looking at this thread, and did some research on the issue. Everyone should take a look at the following Howards Forum post, and please notice the date on it! 12-23-2008. In reading the thread, apparently as described above that LG did cripple this very basic feature when the release of the chocolate2 V4 software, and Verizonwireless stated that they made LG aware of this issue. http://www.howardforums.com/showthrea... This issue was also brought up a very long time ago, but like everyone here seems to agree HAS NEVER BEEN ADDRESSED! That is simply not right. As stated several time in here this feature has been around for a LONG time, and the fact that they got other things on their plate is really not valid since the question has been dodged so many times and been a fundamental feature for years. I agree with everyone that this issue needs to be addressed and promptly fixed or RECALL the phones! Also, the Lg Product Pro did finally answer this, however all he said was he was going to take a look into it for everyone, that was 12 days ago. see post below. http://www.lgcommunity.com/forums/aff... I had taken my Touch back b/c of the refusal to address the problem since I see no future of this problem actually being corrected by LG to be quite honest ( my opinion ) I will be surprised if they do since the question has been dodged so many times

I'm having the same problem with my env touch, I'm still in my return period thank god and from what I've heard they have no intention of fixing it on this phone. I'm betting it will be fixed on the env touch 2 so we have to buy a new phone. Four, 4 software updates and not a single one to fix this huge problem...Alot of ppl use t9, alot....regardless of having a full querty keyboard...It is easier, safer, and more convient in some circumstances such as doing dishes or paying bills online with your right hand on the mouse...haha...This phone is advertised as having it all...so it needs to have it all. It seems like the phones recently are getting too rushed... I used to LOVE LG and brag so much about them when I had my chocolate...it had it all but locked up often from txt'ing while listening to music, but I still loved it.

I luv how people can't back anything of what they say on here up, n just try to completely defend these obviously overlooked features without any data to support them, or in this case choose to leave things out. I am willing to speculate that the two previous posters are nothing more than LG employees just from how they act! FACT 1: Just b/c the phone has a full qwerty is IRRELEVANT! COMPLETELY! The Touch HAS the ability to text from the outside screen, as does the env3, but some people refuse to acknowledge that fact! FACT 2: The Voyager titanium which is what the touch is built off of HAS the ability to learn words and is fully T9 capable! If your argument is that the touch has a QWERTY, I think I just shot that IRRELEVANT point down, and backed my point n everyone else with a FACT! FACT 3: The Glance is NOT a qwerty phone and it can not learn T9 words. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THAT? FACT 4: The ability to learn T9 words has been a basic, and fundamental feature on LG phones for years, alot of people have already stated that, how and why would that be over looked? CAN YOU EXPLAIN THAT? FACT 5: I have proven in my first post that this problem has been known to LG for almost 9 months now, as was reported in Howard Fourms. I guess that information is beyond their comprehension, or they chose to IGNORE THAT FACT TOO! CAN YOU EXPLAIN THAT FACT? I challenge the two previous posters to back up their words with facts! " And your post brings nothing to the party! " either just unsupported irate talk! I doubt that anyone, even an LG employee can dispute my facts, unlike some people I did do the research on this issue! HAVE A NICE DAY!

I think I know why they disabled the T9, and I am kind of all for it. Here's why- The ONLY reason you need to use T9, unless you are just too lazy to open the keyboard, is because you are driving and texting at once and you want to be able to single-handedly type. TWO separate idiots rear-ended me last month because this "phenomena". Insurance rates are sky-rocketing, people are getting seriously hurt out there, so I am kind of behind the disability of the T9. If you are driving, you should be driving, NOT texting. Otherwise... open up the @#!$ flip!

Hi I previously had the LG Chocolate and it also did not learn words. I purchased the ENV3 without realizing it had the same issue. First I've had other phone models and continue to come back to LG so thank you for all the great phones. However, a huge reason I got rid of the Chocolate was the T9 function. Guess what it didn't have a QWERTY keyboard - so why was the feature disabled then?? Second, the QWERTY keyboard is great most of the time but having the ability to learn words is a feature my Nextel free phone had 7 years ago, so to downgrade in some ways seems ridiculous, which I believe is the point most of us are trying to make. Third, call me lazy but when typing long words, say, Tatianna and I can type "tat" into the t9 and hit next - I'm excited. Or when I'm giving directions and don't have to type out my full address each time but it learns it is great. Fourth, most other model phones with the QWERTY keypad also learn words so when beginning to type any word a drop down screen shows up and you can choose your next word or continue typing. Fine take away the T9 but then add that feature. Fifth, call me a loser but I teach and the fact that when using the QWERTY keyboard it won't capitalize automatically or have easier access to punctuation irritates me. It can be easier to text "grammatically correct" using the T9. Sixth, if you have no problem with the issue the thread is based on could you please stop posting, it seems as though you are just trying to be mean or bother us. Believe me, if we are posting about this we are already irritated and don't need the aggravation. Thank you

And why you guys are concerned about T9 when there is a full QWERTY keyboard is way beyond some of us!

Possibly you should chill until there is a software update.

Previous post was based on this post - I believe the third time you posted that you didn't understand why we would use T9 with QWERTY keyboard.

Also, to add another point. I believe most of us would "chill" if we knew a new update to fix the problem was going to happen. However I let Verizon and LG know about the Chocolate back in November of 08 and there was never an update for and it's going on a year.

Guess what it didn't have a QWERTY keyboard - so why was the feature disabled then??

Because it is much easier for LG to go this route disabling it on all phones; if they didn't., it would be way harder for them to ignore the requests to put it back. If it was already in some models but not others(qwerty phones), there would be absolutely no sane reason not to update it across all models. By disabling it in all models, they have a cohesive new "ban" with no room for ambiguity.

Just FYI that the Touch does have a similar feature. It doesn't "learn" words that you type often but it does suggest a word based on what you're typing.

To set this setting go to Messaging>Settings>Text Entry Settings and click on Show Candidate and Word Prediction. That will at least suggest a word based on a built in dictionary, but it won't "learn" words that you often type. That might help you a bit until they hopefully add this feature with an update.

28 Jul 2009 11:41 AM Quote Reply Alert I appreciate the feedback. LG is aware of the issue and is addressing it. Stay tuned.

there has been many (4 firmware) releases for the env3. phone is still not fixed. many volume issues speakers, speaking, the music and ringtones have issues but most of all is the t9 memory. this phone is as big as the bb pearl. if i wanted a keyboard i wouldve bought a phone that just had that.

i just called LG and they are not commenting. they will not admit that there is an issue until you talk to them for a while and say that youve read all about the issue then they say they are addressing it bu tthe details are "confidential".

yes, the... man who helped me actually said confidential.

they will not say if env3's t9 is supposed to remember words. all they will do is tell you that you can fix it by "abc then switch" but that only works for the current text. if they would say anything they would have to take phones back or refund all of them so i think theyre hoping most people just deal. personally im not willin to, i will be going back by the end of my return time to get a different companies phone.

does the env3 really suck? no i want t9 memory and honestly the treatment i have recieved from LG (call 9/23 at 4:21 am est duration 15 min 21s) sucked.

their protocol on answering questions about this issue has turned me off of them. this would be my 6th LG phone. i have purchased only one other brand (motorola) and got rid of it for the env2 (my previous phone). hope things change.. doesnt look promising.

    fix the

Well of course LG doesn't want to admit that there is a problem. No company wants to come out and admit an issue with a product. The so called "fix" is just a temporary work around and really isn't a "fix" at all. I don't own this phone, but a couple of my friends do now even after telling them not to buy it. They are frustrated like you about this issue and want LG to fix it! The only thing we the people can do is continue to post here and call in and complain. The thing is this issue doesn't bother every enV Touch user, but if every user that this does bother called LG up on the same day about this maybe that would put some pressure on LG to fix it. That's a big maybe though... lol. Thanks for some more info on this since we haven't heard a peep from LG Product Pro on this issue for awhile. I will relay this message to my friends. What is the best number to call LG at so I can give the number to my friends?

The EnV Touch does have so many great features. With an extensive T9 dictionary, along with a notepad that you can write your text on the home screen. Adding words to the T9 dictionary was not included in the development of this phone. This is why we have this forum though so that we can relay suggestions right along with information that we find in the field. Cost and other factors come into the development of a handset. We will see if this feature is changed in a future sw development.

Why and when does LG plan on fixing this issue of the T9 not working with the envy 3? I have had LG phones for many years and I never had an issue. The envy was a great phone and mine took a beating and continued to work flawlessly. Now that I got the envy 3 I can't stand the fact that the T9 doesn't work. Why won't LG fix this problem?? With so many other brands available out there can LG afford to lose customers in this uncertain economy. Unless they just don't give a care about their customers and if that is the situation than maybe everyone should just boycott all LG products.

"there has been many (4 firmware) releases for the env3." Actually, not the case. The original firmware was 03, not 01. So ... as of today, 04 and 05 = 2. "No company wants to come out and admit an issue with a product." Ultimately, this business model fails. Can you say ... "GM" ! The business model of the cell phone manufacturers and carriers appears to be this: "Sure, we will fix those problems ... in the NEXT phone, which oh, btw ... you WILL want to $$Upgrade$$ to, because it will have some new super must have cool features." mx

I brought my phone into verizon last weekend and they told me there was an update to fix the T9 texting memory problem. So, they updated my phone... my phone remembered a word ONCE and never again. Now I am having additional problems with my phone. My screen goes blank every couple of days. What is going on? I have never had so much trouble with a phone in my life! Why can't this be fixed? Other LG phones don't have this problem so it's not like they have to create the wheel. I am very unhappy with this phone and would recommend everyone to stay away. I was much happier with the versa. Unfortunately that was stolen and I thought I was upgrading when I got the env Touch. Boy was I wrong!

Excellent question. My friends who own this phone said there were not many available. I own the Samsung Rogue and there is little available for it as well. I sent an email to Verizon about it a couple of weeks ago and they replied back by saying it's out of their control because it is developers who make and release the app.

I agree 100% with all of your assertions! I've been dealing w/this POS phone way beyond any acceptable limits of patience and CONSUMER-RIGHTS... say it again with my people; CONSUMER + RIGHTS! The complete absence of a real, honest answer about this issue in particular reeks of FRAUD in my book and in the law's book... It's clear that they've completely neglected the issue, yet have been advertising it as if the T9-capability was FULLY functional and working in this model, which it is NOT!

___I'm sorry but who actually uses/can use the outer screen for anything aside from a quick, 1-handed review of incoming msgs. When T9 is enabled for the outer screen *laughing hard*, it takes LONGER to T9 a basic sentence, than it does to manually do it with "abc!" This is a complete joke on us...

T9 isn't going to be "fixed" b/c it was NEVER enabled on this model in the 1st place. So a "fix" would actually be a complete rewrite of the firmware itself, which would probably conflict with other functions, so they've just covered it up with the (excuse) bait-&-switch technicality of "it works on the outer screen, thus it 'works...'" More legalese/corporate jargoning.

We've ALL been had about this issue and the many others, and here's a great place to PROVE that these commonly reoccurring issues take place:

    http://verizonwireless.howardforums.c...

I'm 100% NEVER EVER buying an LG product again, lol... As cliche as it sounds, WHO would trust LG's future product lines, when here you have a decent phone that's been completely NEGLECTED and left riddled with verifiable bugs and such? I'll never spend a penny lining the pockets of these rich corporate dregs. I mean come on... if you bought ANY other major appliance or electronical device (washer/drier/stove/microwave/TV etc.) and said device had as many bugs/non-working features as this phone's model-line: You would ALL be returning them immediately! But since it's a small, cutesy looking "toy" phone, people just take the abuse and remain sheepish and silent! I WILL NOT! They've ignored us and are laughing all the way to the bank.

BYE Lame-Garbage: Customer #3498394893284 is pulling the profit plug on my end... hopefully the rest of you will also.

I got two Samsung Rogues instead of buying these phones. My wife wanted one so bad, but I told her no with all the problems this phone has. Two of my friends have it and do nothing but complain about it. Mostly they complain about reboots/random shutdown/restarts even after upgrading to software version 5. Seriously have you looked at the recent reviews on the Verizon website. It use to be 4 stars and has dropped to 4 stars now. I have a feeling most of our issues/complaints will be fixed, but not with this phone. LG will probably hold off and implement everything on the EnV Touch 2. However, by that time they may have pissed off so many consumers that there may not be anyone interested in buying the enV Touch 2 because they have scorned their name and reputation. In my opinion the first enV Touch was rushed before it was finished and I just dont see LG taking the time to dig into the software and re-write code for proper fixes. This is a shame since this phone has a lot of potential, but at times is a POS. Also I have seen a couple of requests here for a list of fixes that software version 5 was suppose to provide. Has anyone seen one yet? My guess is that there is one, but LG doesnt want to provide it because people will complain about stuff on the list that was supposedly fixed, but is still not working correctly on the phone.

Looks like no lesson was learned by LG since the problem still exists, not to mention the Chocolate Touch suffers from the exact same problem of not being able to learn words from what the users on Howard Forum are posting. One would have figured since July 09 when LG finally stated that they were aware of the issue on these forums that it would have been addressed after over 4 months, guess they truly could care less about their customers who have been using their products for years with T9 dictionary able to add words. All we been hearing from LG is either: " we are aware of it" or "we are looking into it". Of course we have always known LG was aware of it, but what is actually being done to address the problem if anything at all? Thats what we all would like to know instead of sidestepping the issue. Needless to say if LG is going to continue this backwards stepping all the time, they will be bleeding customers! Unfortunately the lack of this feature, and more so the lines of BS that are fed to customers will and have an impact eventually once people get wise to the fact! BTW the moto droid a full qwerty does have the ability to add words, and it always remembers them, not just for an hour or two. Once people know that LG phones have the T9 custom word dictionary crippled and all other phones don't, gonna be interesting to see how long LG will last as a real competitor. Wake up LG! Simply side stepping the issue is not good customer service. LISTEN to your customers! Have a great holiday!

Yeah I WISH! I watching this forum like an FBI agent watching a suspect locker at the airport... Nobody's coming to collect the cash yet. These people at this "corporation" don't give 1 single fsck about this phone, nor "us" the chattering-CATTLE! Again, they see us like a king and his royal court scoff at the anxious, festering mob of peasants outside the castle walls. They do NOT give 1 spit about our problems or else someone would have fixed this/recalled the phones by now.

Unlike Toyota and car companies; when a phone has some kind of major feature (purposely) missing or bug that prevents the full 100% ADVERTISED usage of the phone; do WE get a recall or some kind of consumer JUSTICE, FSCK NO! They just sweep it under the rug and LAUGH all the way to the bank as the stupid peasants CONTINUE to blindly support these charlatans and FRAUDSTERS!

LG is nothing but a shill, a front, another greed based conglomerate of Kings. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!

I've tried to be civil about this matter, but it's obviously not appropriate any long as they don't care to listen; I'll NEVER EVER buy an LG product again - COWARDS!

Screw being calm and civil any longer... The best hope any of you all can do is to google search your local state/city about a CLASS-ACTION lawsuit. A few have lready begun to gain momentum...

I'm glad that other people are spreading the world about this issue. This is hilarious, and embarrassing to the entire company. This issue happened on two phones which came out around the same time, which makes it excusable. But then it happened on another phone as well. You have acknowledged it on this forum and then released another product with the same flaw. It's clearly something that isn't easy to fix, either because of costs or hardware limitations. If I had to guess it would be that the phone functions with an extremely tight amount of ROM memory and as a cost cutting measure there was no inclusion of a learning T9 database, but it was instead replaced with a flat dictionary file, with only a small amount of space for temporary learning (hence the Abc fix being temporary). It really sucks. I don't know what to tell everyone, but I use my phone however I want, and for me, t9 is extremely fast, and I use the front screen for >90% of what I do with the phone. I can play my music while I walk to class (though the cumbersome 2.5" adapter sucks in 2010), I can text (most of what I do), and I can place/receive calls. That's really all I use my phone for. I don't really take pictures with my phone, because when I press the camera button my phone will turn off instantly about 50% of the time. The camera will then work perfectly when it turns back on, but the moment is already lost... so thanks for that LG. I basically have a phone that has fewer features than my previous VX8350 which honestly was a great phone (besides the hinge issue which you lovingly fixed for free). I don't know, I want to love this phone. It's a few firmware updates away. If it didn't turn off when I pushed the camera button & so often randomly in my pocket + t9 on the front worked... I would keep it until it broke. I'm not a smartphone guy, I just text a lot and find the form factor of the Closed Env3 and its durability to be perfect for my needs.

So I know that its been about a year since this board was active last, so obviously some things have changed. There is now some semblance of word learning, but it sucks. I'll admit that I use elipses VERY often. Way more often, might I add than: ":-) | :-( | 11. | ?". | ^_^ | -_- | >:( | :>( | >.< | ;-) | :-*" ALL of which I have to go through in order to get to my nice little "..." I don't understand how these end up in there. If I have used them, it was ONCE by ACCIDENT! So why did the word acquisition pick those up? I mean really?? Why the hell would I use " ?". "???? Really regret buying this phone just because of the terrible form of t9. I honestly DON'T understand why there has been NO fix for this.
