This sounds great. Does Bitpim work with the LG Rumor?

I would assume that the Rumor would be compatible on Bitpim, at least at some level, sence Bitpim works with most CDMA phones. If the main icons don't work, you will most likely be able view the phone's file system and add the ringtones there. Give the above process a try first and repost if you have any problems or questions. There are tons of people out there with alot of experience doing this that will be able to help!

Hmm.. Bitpim detects the rumor as "other cdma phone" but I can't transfer anything to or from the phone through the program. I'll check with the Bitpim authors to see if they have an update out soon that supports the Rumor.

The reason you cant transfer anything using the normal icons in bitpim is because as of yet bitpim doesnt support the Rumor. What you have to do, is after Bitpim recognizes the phone as an Other CDMA Phone, click on the View tab at the top. When the drop down menu appears click on View File System. A small brownish orange icon will then appear at the bottom of the list of icons at the left of the screen. Click on that and wait till a blue folder with a plus sign shows up. Click on the plus sign and wait a moment for the file system to drop down. You will then have to go through and find the file where the ringtones are located. An easy way to do that is to go to your ringtones before hand and find out what their names are (if they have a name) ie Ode to Joy (or whatever). Then you can click on those ringtones and replace them with custome ringtones that you have stored on your computer or add new ones by copying and pasting them in the that file in the filesystem of your rumor. I'll keep looking around ro a spare rumore lying about so i can find the right file and then i'll get back to you. Good luck.

OK, I have a Rumor. Trying to get Bitpim to recognize it has been unsuccessful. I have a feeling it's because I'm trying to connect through bluetooth. I know that some of the phones are able to connect that way, but the Rumor isn't even supported by Bitpim (which is why you have to come in as an "Other CDMA Phone"... so I'm thinking maybe that's why it doesn't work... I'm not so worried about what to do once I get it connected... I'm just really frustrated at being unable to get it connected. For reference: I am able to connect the phone as a bluetooth device... already have all my pictures, backgrounds, etc. in there through my default bluetooth client. The problem is accessing the file system to access the ringtones (which is why I need Bitpim to work). Do I really *have* to do it with the USB? Not looking forward to paying for or storing another dongle around here.

here is an alternative way to put ringtones on your phone. Use any audio editing software (such as Audacity) to trim and convert any song into an mp3 ringtone and save the file in an easily accessible location on your hardrive. Then use http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/ to find and send the ringtone to your phone over the air. (for sprint users) Let me know if how this works out for you all.

Thanks, Pro. I actually already knew about Rumkin. The problem is I'd rather not spend the money on the data charges as I don't have a data plan. This is why I'm trying to find a way to get media on my phone without using the internet.

I haven't ever tried to do this through bluetooth. It just seems to complicate things a little too much. So i would suggest buying a USB cable on ebay for like a buck. good luck.

If you can get it to be assigned a com port Bitpim will work with it just fine. it just won't auto-detect. You have to go into the control panel for bluetooth and activate the service.. or however the process is for your software (I've used Bluesoleil many times with success). Once you have a com port assigned to the phone, just set Bitpim up with "Other CDMA phone" and the appropriate port. You won't be able to use the handy-dandy ringers tab, but you will be able to get to the filesystem.







If you get a "this directory locked by the provider" error, try right clicking the filesystem pane and click on "NV edit mode" or "DM mode" whichever one it is these days.

So, I broke down and bought the USB. Still unable to get the bluetooth to work with Bitpim. Can get in through the USB, found the file system, poked around, found what looks like a directory to put ringers in, put files in it, the phone doesn't know they're there.



I see a lot of folks saying lots of stuff but rumkin is the only thing I've actually seen work. But you have to pay data charges for that.







It's hard being cheap.

If you haven't tried it already, One simple thing that mike make a difference is after you add the mp3 files to the ringtone directory, try rebooting your phone.

I dont think you can add your own ringers over bitpim unless you know how to code in hex... I tried going through every file (because they must be there somewhere) and there is a lot of hex coding and no access to UI or MIDI files... I dont think Bluetooth will do any good at all. If there is a way to write ringers in to the Rumor I will find it and share...

Ok, This seems like a long way to go about it, but I have found no other way at this time... I have not tried this yet myself but it seems logical. This new "howto" covers the details on how to create a custom ringer without using Vision. This article assumes that you are using Windows XP but should work for other platforms, you'll just need to research software to perform the functions I am going to describe. You'll need a MicroSD card for your LG Rumor and either a USB cable or a MicroSD reader connected to your PC. The technique described here works based on the functionality of the LG Rumor to assign a video in .3g2 format as a ringtone. It was assembled using various sources of information discovered on the Internet and is collected here as a complete "howto." Step 1: Create the ringtone This step is the same as the previous "howto" article. The first thing you need to do is select the audio you're going to use. This could be music or a voice recording. I started with a high-quality MP3 file. You'll want to use a clip no longer than 30 seconds so you need to edit the portion of the audio that you want to use down to that length. I used Adobe Audition for this because I happened to have it but a simpler, free, online tool that will do the job is at http://www.makeownringtone.com ... once you have a clip you like, just save it to your computer in MP3 format. Step 2: Create the video In this step, you will create a short WMV video up to 30 seconds in length. The easiest way to do this is with Windows Movie Maker that comes free with Windows XP. Fire up Windows Movie Maker and switch to "Timeline" view. Import your MP3 from Step 1 and assign it to the audio/music layer. Make sure it begins at 0 seconds by dragging it all the way to the left. Now drag something to the video layer. This could be a photo, a short video clip or simply a blank frame if you prefer. I have generally used a photo in my testing. Make sure it begins at 0 seconds and ends the same time as the music clip. Adjust the length by clicking and dragging the right edge of the video or image in the timeline so that it matches the audio length. Save the resulting video as a WMV file. I use the "High quality video (small)" preset for this. Step 3: Convert WMV to 3G2 Next, you need to covert your WMV file to the 3G2 video format used by the LG Rumor (and many other phones). The best tool I found for doing this is the Freez 3GP Video Converter from http://www.smallvideosoft.com ... it's free, simple and seems to work fine for this purpose. Once you've downloaded and installed this tool, fire it up and load your WMV into the converter by clicking the "Add" button at the bottom left. Set the output directory to the folder you want to store your 3G2 file in. Pick "3GPP2" from the "File Format" dropdown. You can play around with the other settings to get the result you want, but I generally use the following: Video Settings Video Code: MPEG4 Resolution:176x144 Width: 176 Height: 220 Video Quality: 8-Medium Zoom Mode: Letterbox Audio Settings Audio Code: AAC-LC Audio Bitrate: 48kBPS Audio Frequency: 22050 Hz Channels: Mono *Note: Width and Height differ from the resolution and work with the LetterBox setting in order to create black bands above and below your actual video/picture content when displayed on the phone. If you leave Height set to 144 you will get white bands instead and it doesn't look as good. After you adjust the settings, click the "Convert Now!" button to save your 3G2 file. Step 4: Copy the 3G2 file to your LG Rumor If you're using a MicroSD card reader, remove the memory from your phone and plug it into the reader (which should be connected to your PC). If using the USB cable, connect your phone to the cable and to the PC, and when prompted by your phone select "Mass Storage" mode. If for some reason you aren't prompted, you can set the phone to "Mass Storage" mode using the Settings/Tools menu and picking "USB Mode" from the "Tools" sub-menu. Go to "My Computer" and find the new drive that represents the memory card. Double click on the "DCIM" folder. Inside this folder you should have another folder that holds the contents of your memory card. On mine it is called "100LGDCF" but I don't know if it's the same on all phones or not. Open up this folder, this is where your MP3 music for the media player is stored and also where 3G2 files created by the built-in camcorder are stored. This is where you will copy your new ringer. Name it whatever your like, it doesn't seem to make a difference. Step 5: Assign the 3g2 video as your ringer Once you have copied the new ringer to your memory card, either insert the MicroSD card back into your phone or exit "Mass Storage" mode by hitting the END button and picking "Yes." Now hit "Menu/OK" to bring up the main menu and pick "Pictures" and then "My Albums" from the sub-menu. You'll see an entry to view videos on your Memory Card, pick this. On the next screen you'll see thumbnails for any videos stored on your Memory Card. Highlite the one you want, and pick "Play" from the "Options" menu to preview it. If you like it, pick "Assign" from the "Options" menu to assign it as a ringer by clicking through the menu options that pop up on the screen. Note that while your video was stored on the Memory Card, when you assign it as a ringer a copy will be made to the LG Rumor's internal memory. Deleting the video off the Memory Card at this point will *not* remove it from internal memory or remove it as a ringer. To completely delete it you will need to go to the Settings/Tools menu where you assign ringers and pick "Assigned Media" as the location for ringers, then highlite the one you want to get rid of and pick "Delete" from the "Options" menu. Final Thoughts The downside to this technique is that if you have a custom image assigned to a particular caller, you won't be able to see it as the video will replace it on the screen when they call. On the plus side, you can have any image or video you want pop up and the volume seems louder to me. You *can* assign a custom video ringer to a contact BTW, you just need to have assigned it as a "general" ringer first so that it will show up in the "Assigned Media" menu and then it is available to assign to a contact. As an option to creating your own video, you could use a video clip from a music video or any other video source you might have available on your PC.

I am a little confused about this. When Right click on the filesystem pane i get four options



Refresh filesystem, offline mode, reboot phone, and go to modem mode



When i right click the filesystem icon i get more options

Keep in mind I don't have Sprint and/or a rumor... You are getting a director locked by provider message? Try offline phone. You might need to get your hands on a copy of LG download to put the phone in NV edit mode. I would try what the person posted a few lines back that he found in the Sprint user forums, since obviously those people know a lot about Sprint and not just LG phones in general.

I apologize if this is a double post. My first submission seemed to get lost.



I had success up to a point in using the process described.



I am using a memory card attached to my laptop via a USB adapter, as opposed to a direct USB hookup from the phone to the computer. I have created the 3g2 file by following the instructions, and I moved that file to the DCIM>100LGDCF subdirectory on the memory card. When I re-inserted the card into the phone, I went to the Menu>Pictures>Photo Album>Memory Card subdirectory. The 3g2 file is visible, and I can play it using the Options key.



This is where I get into trouble. When I use Options>Assign, I do not get any other menu choices. It automatically assigns the file as a screen saver, with no other choices available.



Does anybody have any idea what I am doing wrong, or how I can get past this point to assign the file as a ringer.



I am actually using the Canadian version of the Rumour (sorry, the Rumor - I was using the Canadian spelling) on the Bell Mobility network. However, I assume that the programming is going to be the same, regardless of the country of origin.

I have an enV2 on Verizon and I will tell you how I make custom ringtones. 1. There are a few programs out there that allow you to slice and dice your music files... either way, get a piece of music that you want to use as a ringtone. 2. I put my micro sd card in my computer, then I load the music, in mp3 format, into the "My Sounds" folder. Put card back in phone. 3. Then I go to the Message menu and create a Picture Message. Add yourself as the recipient, then go to where you can add sound. Add your desired sound then send the message. 4. Once you receive the message, you then have the ability to "Save As Ringtone" I have found this to be a lot more reliable method than using a program like ToneThis

This is just an uneducated guess (I have the same problem), but I bet that Sprint was very kind in updating our firmware for us as to disable this "useless".... ahem.they.just.want.to.make.money..... feature.

The software loaded on the phone does not let you select anything but an image file when sending a Picture message. MP3's are not recognized. Even if you could send one, it sounds like the same software won't let you save a sound file locally. I tried sending myself an e-mail with an MP3 attachment, which I could play when I received, but there was no way to save it off to the phone. Only send by bluetooth or e-mail to someone else.



Of course, I got around this limitation by going to a website that allows you to send a text message for an uploaded file. The text message contains a link to the file, so when you click on it and launch your browser, you end up able to retrieve the file by HTTP download. It's very slow and doesn't always work, but at least I got a nice selection of my own custom sounds and ringtones loaded on the phone now.

I use the Lotus so it might be a little diff.

With the 3g2 file in the DCIM>100LGDCF folder already do the following

1 - Select Personalize My Phone

2 - Select Change Ringer

3 - Select Contact Entries

4 - Select All Contacts

5 - Select My Albums

6 - Select Memory card

7 - pick the file you added

I can also pick the new ringer by changing the ringer in each contact

1 - open contact

2 - select ringer

3 - select change

4 - Select My Albums

5 - Select Memory Card

6 - Select File

- OR -

1 - 3 again

4 - Select Assigned Media

(this way only works is you have assigned the file before.)

Hopefully that will help some people
