I've noted some other forum entries about "butt dialing", but none specific to the Env3 -- which in my experience is second to none in its propensity to unlock and dial within a purse or pocket. The unlock implementation in the Env3 is not just dumb, it is offensively stupid. To demonstrate this for yourself, let the phone time out (or hold "0" to lock it). Place it on a flat surface then cover it with a mouse pad, folded facecloth, or other suitable butt simulator. Mash down on the covered phone just firmly enough to hear keyclicks. Repeat twice more. The phone is unlocked. Repeat some more to enjoy the mystery of what settings you've changed or far off people you've dialed. What makes this offensive (to my sensibilities as an engineer) is that this could be fixed with a near-trivial firmware change: reset the unlock sequence if any key /other than/ "Ok" is pressed. That way a sequence of mash-downs won't be very likely to get past the first step. I read elsewhere that there was a firmware update to the Env2 which provided a "two-step" unlock option, which required "Ok" followed by "Clr". That's fine, but it would likely be just as ineffective unless the sequence is reset by any key other than "Clr". Otherwise a mash-down is likely to get it just as easily as "Ok". In fact, without a sequence reset it might be worse -- a single mash-down might get both those keys, and given that the "Ok" is raised relative to "Clr", would likely get them in the right sequence. A slightly more advanced improvement would be to notice that multiple keys are pressed simultaneously, and in this case not just reset the unlock sequence but disable it for a short duration.

I appreciate your feedback I use my EnV 3 a lot, and luckily haven't had a problem with the dialing. I am forwarding your suggestions to our product team. I just listened to a presentation a few weeks ago and found out a lot about the reasoning for some inclusions and exclusions in phone development. I was amazed out what really goes into one phone. We are always looking to be better,so thank you for taking the time to talk to us.

Thanks for listening!
To be precise, it is when the phone says "PRESS OK AGAIN" that there's an opportunity for any other key to set the state back to "PRESS OK TO UNLOCK", or perhaps better, all the way back to lights out. I appreciate the fact that the "PRESS OK AGAIN" state has a three second time-out, but it seems that the bucket seat of a car is all it takes to overcome the lock. ;-) This wouldn't make a difference for users that select the "Press Once" option, but they must not be having a problem anyway (or else they'd have tried the "Press Twice" option). OTOH, if you went to lights out for any key other than OK even at the "PRESS OK TO UNLOCK" state, that possibly would make the lock more robust even for users with the "Press once" option. Glad you saw that presentation (wish I had), but in general yes, the things you learn about your product through usability testing are often amazing, and possibly horrifying to the development team.
Such a study might show that going all the way to lights out for any key other than OK might be more confusing than it is worth.

I'm new to this so forgive me if I'm not in the right place. The Env3 keyboard lock function is a real problem. I like to keep my phone in my front pocket - I've eliminated keys , change, etc. In the past two days the phone has been activated and dialed 18 numbers (most of them nonsense) in two cases I received a call back from people I rarely talk to. In one case, the woman stayed on the line attempting to hear what I was talking about to others - funny to her, a potential hazard for me. I am reduced to locking the phone with my code - after pressing 9 numbers with the phone in the open position, Im safe. Then, when I make a call, unlock the phone and --DONT FORGET--it needs to locked again. Its this simple, if the problem doesn't have a quick fix, the phone has to go back to Verizon - I simply can't afford the potential liability this "press ok twice" disarming system represents to me. HELP otherwise, I like the phone.

Hi thanks for posting. Do you think that a holster would work for you? I am unaware of another way to lock your phone that would be more convenient. I totally understand that pocket dialing is completely inconvenient and a potential hazard". I will forward your concern.

Along these lines, I'm not sure if this is a request or a need for education on my part, but can I adjust the timeout on the lock. If I'm entering a phone number on the 10 key and go too slow, the keypad will lock on me. It looks like it's about a 7 second timeout right now. Can I modify that? Maybe I'm asking for a setting (along the lines of the backlight timeout) to controll how long I want the device to wait before auto-locking again. Thanks!

Shai has an excellent suggestion and it or something similar should be implimented as soon as possible. I am a paramedic and as such my phonebook contains numbers for various ER emergency lines, backdoor numbers to the county 911 center. As such this pocket dialing problem can be a significant problem. 10 minutes ago I got a callback from the county 911 center realized my phone was in emergency mode and had activated e-911. This drove me over the edge. The phone is on the double click to unlock mode, i have disable one touch dialing, i've switched pockets, carry position, etc. Nothing works. There are no particularly good cases available for this phone that both protect the front screen and buttons yet allow the flip-open functionality without removing the case. Not only is rediculous that this problem exists and there isn't yet a simple fix available, but given that this isn't an isolated problem, i can guarantee that somewhere, right this instant, an Env3 user is wasting some dispatcher's time and tying up emergency services.

Obviously, a problem with pocket/purse dialing would be confined to people who carry their phone in a pocket or purse.
The implication in your post that people with this problem should just "wear a pouch" really doesn't fly. Many people don't like how a belt pouch breaks up the lines on their cloting and makes it look like they have a hip tumor, others like myself have a radio, 2 pagers, glove pouch, flashlight, etc. cluttering their belt already. Others might not wear belts.
This is a obvious problem that needs a simple firmware fix.

Yes, you can. Unlock the phone from the exterior keypad. Select menu. Use the left and right arrows to scroll through the menu until you get to Key Guard. Select that and you can chose up to 30 seconds to auto lock or never lock at all, although not letting it lock will cause the problems people have when carrying it in their pocket. You can also set it so you have to press the OK key twice to unlock it. This also helps pocket carriers. The Verizon store told me that I couldn't change this setting. But an email to LG's tech support got me the answer. Personally, I use the two-press unlock setting and carry it in a belt pouch. I've never had it dial by itself. I started using cell phones when they had to be hard wired, then bag phones, etc. I like the env3 better than any other one I've ever owned. Now, if I can figure out how to keep the forum site from sending me 25 emails a day, I'll be happy.

I registered here JUST to post in response to this topic... This is very much an issue with the enV3! It's downright ridiculous how easy it is to unlock the phone in your pocket. Sometimes the phone isn't even locked, like during a data call (Bluetooth tethering). I was hesitant to get a phone with front buttons for this very reason. Back in the old Nokia days, it was a problem as well - even though those phones had a much improved Menu-* combination (at opposite ends of the keypad)! Now, even with two-press OK enabled (that's under front menu->keyguard->3. unlock options->press twice), it's still a problem from time to time - much more often than I'd like to admit. I haven't yet pocket-dialed anyone (which is surprising, since "Emergency" is the first contact if you hit Contacts!), but I imagine I've gotten pretty close... I frequently pull out my phone to find the Bluetooth menu open, or random digits dialed on the screen, etc. LG, please fix this! I've put my faith in LG for the past 3 phones (VX6100, VX8300, and now the EnV3/VX9200). So far, so good. But this is just a serious step backwards in terms of usability. While you're at it, can you please fix the text entry processing speed? I can almost count the rate at which it accepts buffered keypresses. I can type a text message a ways in advance of it entering on the screen (and beeping), it's just silly that I sometimes have to wait 2-3 seconds for it to catch up! >.

Thanks dude, but, you're still not getting it. I carry my phone in my pocket with the keyguard set to 7 second delay with a double click to unlock. It still goes off. The reason yours doesn't is because you wear your phone in a pouch, not because you discovered a super-secret way to lock the keys. It's simply not an issue for people who carry in a pouch.

I've gotta be honest the lock function drives me nuts on this phone. I carry the phone in a belt holster and it still unlocks itself in the holster. I find the random numbers and calls, as well as changed blue tooth and background pictures. Just today while working on my truck the phone entered the music player and started playing away, while supposedly locked. I guess next will be taking pictures on its own. I truely miss the lock feature of my vx10 and vx5200 which you held a key to lock it then entered the four digit code to unlock it. Would it be too hard to allow the user to select the current modes to lock/unlock or the classic mode from the same menu?

The "butt dialing" problem is exactly the reason I am hesitating to buy the EnV-3. Everything about the phone is appealing: size, texting ability, front keyboard... but I would rather stay with my old phone (with which I can only make calls on speakerphone - quite embarassing at times) than buy the EnV-3 when I am positive I will have problems with it unlocking in my pocket. It seems there is an easy fix to this problem, without extensive re-programming on the part of LG: prior LG model phones needed a 4 digit "password" to unlock the phone. Adding this option to work just on the front keyboard (without getting rid of the "click once" and "click twice" options - I know some people would still use those) this would completely eliminate the problem. And I could finally get a new phone

I bought this phone to carry in my pocket - was tired of messing with pouches on my belt. But it constantly butt dials, shuts off on its own or plays random music. Yes I have it on two press and 7 seconds. Why in the world would you design a phone using the most protruding key as the unlock. The OK button should have been recessed not sticking out. PLEASE add a software update to compensate for this poor design.

I've had this phone 3 months and keep it in a belt holster and am constantly having issues with the lock function not actually locking. As previously stated - changed wallpapers, "butt dialing" -- in my case holster dialing, etc. I had the original ENV and never had this issue. FYI, I'm using the Verizon Universal Pouch: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/st.... @Winger - I've tried the keyguard using my belt holster. Good thing you reminded me because the holster dialing reset my phone to require a single OK click. Adding a four digit code (suggested by @kashack) would be really helpful. Or combo key. Something. Please. Replication: Put phone in pouch. Make sure it is on and keyboard locked. Rub hand across pouch a couple of times. Watch the results. Real life situations: Walking through crowded areas. Getting in/out of vehicle. Sitting in chair and shifting weight. Removing/replacing phone to check time. Sheesh. Other than that , it's a great phone

Read this:.. LG went backwards regarding the lock function in my opinion..... I had the same "butt-dialing" issues with my EnV2 UNTIL the 06 software came out with the "Two Step Unlock" option..... Then LG came out with the EnV3 and they didn't incorporate the solution to this issue that they had already solved with the EnV2.... I'm looking to get a new phone, and I may need to look at other manufacturers because I don't want to butt-dial with LG's current phone options. I like LG's phones but I refuse to deal with that butt-dialing again.....My question is how many complaints does it take to get a software change?... R-
[from Randog] -

Hey Shal, The "Two Step Unlock" option on the EnV2 does do a sequence reset if any key other than "CLR" is pressed. This drastically reduces "butt-dialing" even in "mash-down" conditions. The 06 to current firmware for the EnV2 is great. R-

To echo the above posts, the phone comes unlocked WAY too easily and this problem needs to be addressed. I have tried using a stiff leather belt holster and have still leaned up against the center console in the car and found music coming from my phone, or the bluetooth menu up, or pictures shown or numbers dialed. I then tried a plastic holder where you clip the phone into it. If you clip it in with the keypad buttons to the outside, you have the same problem. This particlar clip also allows you to clip the phone with the keypad to the inside. Problem solved? Not really. The plastic holder is fliexible enough that buttons will get pushed if you sit in a chair, get in the car, etc. I took a small piece of styrofoam type material and glued it to the plastic holder so that it would touch just above the up arrow key when the phone was in the clip. This spacer keeps the OK button away from the inside of the clip. This has helped considerably. I think there should be an option for the keypad to unlock by pressing the camera key on the left side of the phone body. When the phone is locked, the camera key does nothing and would be available to use as an unlock key. This key is pretty well protected by the overhang of the clamshell and is convienent to use with the forefinger or thumb (depending on which hand you hold the phone). To be even safer, one might click the camera key and then the OK key to unlock. On another note, I CANNOT BELIEVE that I have to first unlock the phone in order to answer it. I guess some people might want that to be sure they don't accidentally answer a call while the phone is in their pocket; but it should be a configuration option because I REALLY hate that and it isn't how other phone brands I use work.

From the external screen of the phone, press menu, and move over to the Key Guard setting.
I registered on this forum for the sole purpose of supporting this thread. I too am having problems with pocket dialing, even with the double-press feature. The problem is that the OK button is the highest point on the phone face. I would greatly appreciate a different button to unlock, or a two-button approach like * + CLR or something similar.

Like otherS, I registered just because this phone is DRIVING ME CRAZY. I love the phone itself other than the unlocking problem. I don't mind pushing keys to unlock it. I did carry it in my pocket but that didn't work so I purchased a holster for it, I've tried it in the holster both with keys in/keys out. It either dials a random number, shuts off, plays music or turns on my bluetooth constantly. Even while in the holster, I can "press" on the holster twice, and the third time who knows what will happen. I too only shop for LG phones but am sorely disappointed in this one & am stuck with it due to the contract.

To LG Product Pro Please ask for an immediate firmware change like the ENV2. A two key consecutive unlock ("ok" then "clr" ). That simple. It solved my ENV2 butt dialing problem. My wife just got the ENV3 which I assumed had the same fix, but to my surprise you just have to hit "ok" twice and you can hit any other key in between the first and second and it doesn't require you to hit "ok" again. I'm afraid we'll have to return to verizon within the 30 day return window if not fixed in the next 15 days. HELP! YOUR PRODUCT TEAM NEEDS TO FIX ASAP!

I have found the reason to the "Butt Dialing", I need others to verify that the same steps cause your phone to unlock, and if it does please respond so LG knows. I have gotten so frustrated that I finally was just messing with it to find the issue as I suspected it was a hardware/software issue. I went to VZ, but they were not much help. Guess I must go to the source. The following are the combinations I have recently found that cause my phone to unlock without pressing OK. "Send" + "9" + "#" "Send" + "8" + "0" "Send" + "7" + "*" Hope this can get fixed. Thanks, Josh
[from Liegrean] -

Thanks for the Feed back It looks like it took a while to figure out the key combinations... I'm trying to get the attention of the right people to see if we can get something done... I'll let you know what I find out.
[from LG Product Pro] -
-
Although those key combinations may unlock the keypad I don't feel that is the main cause. The problem is that the "OK" key is the tallest key on the pad. Try this - lay the phone face down on a hard surface. Now firmly press it down 3 times. Pick it up and look at the screen. It will be unlocked and any other press on a key will register. When it is in your pocket exactly the same thing happens when something - anything - presses against it. The "OK" key should have been recessed not protruding. But since we are stuck with this design flaw a software fix is needed to compensate.

This thread just blows my mind! I can't believe I stumbled in here. Just last weekend I took my phone back to Verizon because, as I told the guy, "The damn phone keeps shutting itself off!" I figured there was something wrong with the firmware or the battery maybe. Sure, I keep the phone in my pocket, but I figured it couldn't have anything to do with keyguard because I have it activate after 7 seconds and I'm using the double OK approach. Anyway, Verizon was of no help whatsoever, so I gave up. The salesman told me I could come back in about six weeks and upgrade my phone on their "early upgrade plan". After I talked to the salesman, I started looking at how the other phones handle key locking, and I quickly came to the conclusion that the ENV3 is uniquely lame! Even the ENV Touch uses a special button the side of the device and to unlock it requires a finger swipe which is impossible to duplicate when in a pocket. I checked the Moto Droid, and it has a similar set up. Heck, even my old Nokia used a * + Menu approach, and that thing never "butt dialed" or shut off in all the years I had it. So, today I decide to cruise the Internet to see if there is anyway to change the key sequence, and lo and behold I stumble in here. Unfortunately it doesn't look like LG is going to fix this, which really sucks. However, I'm going to print this whole thread out and take it to my Verizon store and make them do something! This is completely unreasonable. And no, I'm not going to buy a belt holder because I'm not a big fan of that look. Thanks for starting this thread!

Even if you were cool with it on your belt, it wouldn't help, plenty of people still have problems using a holster. Obviously, verizon's only solution was to make a quick buck of of you. Come, please, dump a couple hundred bucks on an early upgrade so you can be locked in for a couple more years of useless customer service and high monthly rates.

A band aid fix for inadvertent unlocking...I purchased the silicone case for the ENV3 when I bought the phone on line. As-shipped, it provides no improvement, but with minor modifications, it nearly solves the inadvertent unlocking issue. With the case remove from the phone
carefully cut (use x-acto) around the raised circular silhouette marking the navigation buttons that surround the OK button. Once reinstalled, the silicone case still allows full use of all the buttons, but the navigation and OK button are now effectively recessed and HUGELY less prone to getting inadvertently pressed. This is by no means a perfect solution, but makes it manageable. I'll say I found this case to be horrible as shipped since there are two straps that hold the two halves together that are positioned directly over the phone's hinge brackets, which then causes a gross interference when you open the phone. The interference causes the lower half of the case to misalign with the keyboard, making it hard to find the right buttons. To resolve this issue, I cut the straps off completely. For now, I'm seeing how I do with it this way, but worst case, I may just remove the lower half covering the internal keyboard away completely and just use the top half. Sorry, I don't have time right now to take photos right now, but I think the steps will be evident if you purchase the rubber keyboard cover from the Verizon store. Similar solutions might work for other cases as well, but the rubber is super-easy to trim with a sharp x-acto.

LG ProductPro, Thanks for your efforts on this. I've had an Env3 since October, and due to the inadequate keypad lock, the phone has been powering itself off often enough that I tell friends and family to call me on my company-provided Blackberry. While we understand that you aren't to blame, please understand that your product specialist's response is unacceptable. Even if the Env3's firmware is for some reason completely unrelated to the Env2's, the change that we're asking for isn't exactly rocket science. The fact that this fix has existed for 4 years for the Env2 and doesn't yet exist for the Env3 is almost insulting to the consumer. If your product specialists aren't willing or able to address this issue, then how can we get this issue into the hands of LG North America CEO Wayne Park and get some pressure applied from the top down? I don't think that many of us here have confidence in a "contact support" webpage to get quick results.

Stumbled in here just now and thought I'd add my voice to the issue. I carry my enV3 in my FL pocket and have experienced numerous times everything described in this forum. I've tried the "double-OK" unlock setting to no avail. Nearly every day I find that my phone has unlocked in my pocket and displays a random sequence of numbers on the screen. I've also been finding it powered down, more frequently lately than before. I thought my phone was just going bad and I was getting ready to head to the Verizon store to talk with them. I played with various key presses and for a while there, I found that pressing "Send-*-#" together was powering the phone down. Except after about 4 times, that stopped 'working'. However, I can get the phone to unlock every time with 'Send-7-*' or 'Send-8-0' or 'Send-9-#', as described earlier by another poster. I've had this phone since August (about 6 months). I don't believe I should be forced to live with this problem for another 18 months before I can get a new phone, and I certainly don't think I should have to PAY MORE MONEY for a phone that works before that. Has anyone had any luck getting Verizon to replace/upgrade/switch phones WITHOUT paying more money or extending their committment?

So yes, I keep my phone in my pocket, and when I take it out, I find all manner of random keys pressed on my keyboard, or find the phone turned off altogether! My first impulse was like many of yours: That there was something wrong with my phone. Nope, all it takes is two presses on the "ok" button, and a two-second press on the "end" button. I do it constantly. Accidentally pressing twice on "ok" is easy on the env3. The button is big, and sits right in the middle of the phone. Don't believe me? Turn your phone upside down on a table and push down on it twice. Now pick it up and look at the screen. Phone unlocked. Seriously, LG, do you QA your products AT ALL? I tried changing the lock settings to make them more complex. No such option. I can choose to press OK once, or twice. That's it! There are 100 better options than this. Has LG gotten lazy on us? Now, there is a slightly better option. But don't get excited: It won't solve our problems completely, and it adds unwanted complexity: 1. Open the flip 2. Press OK, 9,6, 7, and enter your phone's security code (you will have to set the code first if you have not already done so). 3. Press 4. The phone will now be in "locked" mode (different than keylock mode) and the user's security code must be entered to unlock the phone, make a call, or read a text message. Because you must enter the code before making a call, this will put an end to MOST pocket dialing. Caveats: 1. Even in "locked" mode, you can press "ok" twice and hit a bunch of random keys, and they will still annoyingly show on your screen when you take it out of your pocket. It's cumbersome to clear this when you want to make a call. ("ok-ok-end-ok-security code"). That's about 8 key touches before you can make a call--definitely not easy to do when driving, for example. 2. When in locked mode, you can still dial emergency or "special number" calls. This means you can still inadvertently call 911 (as another poster did recently). I don't know what a "special number" is: I tried 311, 411, #BAL, and a bunch of my speed dials while in locked mode, and I could not call any of them. 3. You don't need to unlock the phone to answer a call. This means that, if someone calls you while the phone is in your pocket, and you happen to pocket-dial "ok-ok-send" (not as hard to do as it sounds), the person on the other end is going to be talking to your boxer shorts. 4. If you have taken the phone out of locked mode, and wish to lock it again, you must open the flip and follow the three steps listed above. This is tedious! 5. And worst of all: You can still shut the power off when the phone is locked ("ok-ok-end"). So we'll still be dealing with unwanted power-downs. Long story short: The lock mode will help with pocket dialing and not much else.

Followup: I learned from another site that the power-down problem is not due to buttons being pressed, but because the battery (which also doubles as the phone's back) fit's just a tad loosely. I discovered that simply applying pressure the the bottom corner of the battery caused to phone to shut down. Solution: placing a bit of paper inside the battery compartment makes the back fit nice and snug. I first tried folding a sheet of paper a couple of times, but found that it was too thick and caused the back to bulge slightly. So I cut all the folds, so that I just had flat layers of paper (5 to be exact) and that fits great. I also cut a notch around the battery contacts, so I never have to worry about the paper interfering. I have not had a power-down happen since.

I too have found the shut-off problem is related to the battery. And obvious clue was that I never heard it played the shutdown melody - just found it OFF. Applying a spacer as mentioned above maybe a safer method but I went another way. I removed the battery and very carefully bent the four small battery connector strips. They stick up and contact the battery but it seems under pressure the phone body will flex enough to make them loose connection which shuts the phone off. By bending them up just a little my problem was solved. Been over a week carrying it in my pocket with NO shut offs - ZERO. Before wouldn't make it a 30 minutes.
But be careful if you decided to do this. The connectors are fragile and you don't want to break them.
Hope this helps you. Made a huge difference in my satisfaction with the ENV 3.

Yes, I am one more that registered to voice my displeasure about this problem. I have always owned Motorolas, but decided to try the ENV3 since my wife liked her ENV2. It is apparent that LG is NOT interested in fixing this, inspite of it appearing to be a widespread problem and a relative easy fix.(both the loose battery, and the keypad lock). The message they are sending to us is, "Take a hike, we already have your money." If I have to endure one more butt chewing from the wife because she can't reach me because my phone has turned off, I will be passing the chewing along to Verizon along with getting a new non-LG phone. Maybe Verizon can get LG's attention since I am sure there are plenty of these phones coming back with these symptoms.

Has anyone had any luck getting Verizon to replace/upgrade/switch phones WITHOUT paying more money or extending their committment?
LOL, you're new to the verizon wireless family, aren't you?
The way i ended up with my ENV3 is because I originally had a Samsung Alias 2 with the nifty morphing keyboard that started freezing up after about a week. I went back to verizon and told them about the problem and they offered me a swap for another Alias 2. I refused saying that it was obvious the technology was rushed to market and wan't going to get another just to have the same problem again. I argued with them for an hour and they still refused. They then told me if i wanted a new phone today i would have to drive to a store over an hour away because all the local stores were out of stock. I told them to engage in an unnatural act and they finally relented and let me switch to an ENV3, which was the exact same price, but they demanded the $35 fee for swapping phones. After another hour of arguing with the branch manager and causing a scene in the middle of a crowded store, they relented and waived the fee.

I love my Env3 but even using a belt clip and it set to Hit ok twice. It keeps doing teh "Butt Dialing" problem. Instead of some expansive and lengthy way to adjust that portion of the programming, would it not be easier to just to allow a keypad shortcut like most other phones. IE holding * or # for 3 seconds to activate the "Lock Phone Now" function. The long route to get to that function via opening the phone and going through several menu items just to get to it are a pain. When you have young children, having to go through the lengthy process is not always a valid way to fully lock the phone. Please help save my sanity ( or at least what is left of it) because I do not want a different phone. Unless LG is willing to foot the bill for an upgrade. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read.

For class, I would disable ALL my sounds on my Env3 and of course make sure its locked. The other day I heard music playing....then I realized its a song I have on my phone....then I realized its my phone playing music despite it having been disabled sounds AND locked.

It blows me away that LG ignores their customers on an issue like this. If I did that I'd be on welfare. However, It is nice that they have a forum like this so the customers can help each other try to resolve LG's issues. I feel bad for everyone that put their trust in LG and spent their money on the Env 3. It's been long enough for a firmware update like they did with the Env 2. Pride has nothing to do with it. Verizon has you locked in for 2 years and if you get tired of their rushed-to-market phones before your contract is up they stand to make a lot of money. After suffering through a Chocolate II for two years and getting yet another LG phone through Verizon with critical flaws they refuse to address I'm just about done with both companies.
This is exactly why I am now on month 2 month with them since my contract expired, and i buy near new phones that are used and put them onto my account via the internet. I know control them.

I've been now eligible for a new phone since last August, but refuse to give my money to LG and Verizon until there's a solution to this "butt-dialing" problem. I've been a fan of LG phones for years, and have only had one non-LG phone since I've had a cell phone. I'm disappointed at how this issue is being handled, and find myself searching for a new brand of phone that fits my needs as well as LG.

Found this forum while searching to see if I've missed any more thorough way of locking the external keypad on the Env3. I already have it on the 'press ok', 'now press ok again' setting, but this is laughably easy to accidently unlock. I generally keep my Env3 in my pocket. I often find the screen full of random digits or sitting in the bluetooth menu, notice there's mp3s playing from my pocket, or even find I've called people by accident. The last straw was yesterday evening when I got a call from the local sheriff's office asking if everything was ok, because I'd apparently butt-dialed 911. Unfortunately, I've got the best part of 18 months to live with this particular handset. Just wanted to add to the noise in the vague hope that more noise equates to a greater chance of LG doing something about it.

I registered just to reply to this topic. I am a police officer in NC, and I carry my env3 in a third party leather pouch on my duty belt. It seems like every day, several times a day, I pulled out my phone to make a call, only to discover that it had somehow turned itself off. A few times, I pulled it out to discover that I had called several gibberish numbers, and once or twice, I actually called people on my contacts list. I started carrying my phone in my front pockets, only to experience the same result. I have to agree with the other posters - the phone is too easily unlocked, and the "ok" button is set too high on the keypad. Also, I tried to replicate the conditions that keep causing my phone to power off, and discovered that mashing all of the keys at once with the palm of my hand often causes the phone to die, requiring a reboot. Gimme some firmware fixes for this! Make the phone require two DIFFERENT buttons to be pushed in order to be unlocked, preferably not the highest set buttons on the handset.

I'm sorry for the frustration, but I really appreciate the comments. I'm doing what I can to bring this issue to light with those at LG who can help hoping I can get a response for the 70 Plus people who have mentioned the issue on this site, not to mention the other sites... So you mentioned two issues. 1: The Phone Powering down: This is actually being caused by some of the Batteries that are just a fraction of a MM out of spec so they don't fit exactly tight and cause some the phones to Power Down. Verizon is aware of this and they have have a process in place to check and or replace the Battery or Phone. 2:The Unlock Button issue that some users are experiencing is indeed causing some frustration, and even though I didn't see it on my enV3, I hear your complaint and I'm doing what I can from my position to escalate the concern... Trust me, this will be the first place I post an answer as soon as I get one. Keep the comments coming!

The key lock problem needs to be fixed. I pocket call all the time. I did some testing. It turns out that I can unlock my keypad by mashing keys randomly (purposefully avoiding the "ok" key). Is this an enV3 problem in general or an issue with my keypad?

If you read back in the thread, you'll see that there are, inexplicably, multiple key combinations that can unlock the keyboard.

My previous phone had been an LG and I had serious problems with the volume never being loud enough. I thought the EnV3 would be better (based on reviews) and it is... but like other posters I've noticed this phone unlocks way too easily and to re-lock is too many steps. This has cost me countless fees for services that have been downloaded to my phone either by my butt or by my wee ones - who love phones and manage to get a hold of it no matter where I put it. I finally had to call Verizon and ask to have all downloads blocked. My old LG phone had the option of adding the lock code by simply holding down the # key for a few seconds or auto-locked after a (selectable) short delay. If you can program it that way for one LG phone, why not this one? Other than the lack of this feature, I have been fairly happy with this phone and would buy another if the next one works as well as this one and fixes the lock feature. PS - This phone is actually fairly tough ... I drove over it once with my Toyota Corolla after dropping it in the snow... surprisingly it survived with little damage and still functions just fine!

I experience both of these issues while carrying my Env3 in my pocket. I'm constantly having to turn my phone back on after I pull it out of my pocket just to make a call or check the time. Or sometimes I'll miss important calls because I'm unaware that my phone has turned off in my pocket. I've also called 911 multiple times due to "Emergency Mode" activating in my pocket.. and let me tell you they aren't happy when they call back and find out it was just due to my phone hitting some keys against my pocket. The phone dials random people in my contacts or just gibberish numbers all the time. Sometimes it even makes about 10 or 15 calls within a 2 minute period to random gibberish numbers that all last for 2-3 seconds. I've also had people listen in to my real world conversations because the phone dialed them when it was in my pocket. It changes settings, backgrounds, takes pictures... etc. I have to deal with this every day, all day long. And a belt pouch is not an option.
What is the process Verizon has to fix the battery issue? Can I just take it up to a Verizon store and have them give me a new battery?

They can backup your old phone and restore it to your replaced one.

I too have had quite a few problems with this phone. It turns off on it's own quite a bit, this can be slightly fixed by making sure that the battery contacts are really clean, but this doesn't completely eliminate the problem. The unlocking is also really annoying, especially when it starts playing music in class. But the main reason I posted this was to explain the multiple key press unlock thing that is going on. This is just how the keyboard works, when specific 3 buttons are pressed, a 4th is automatically pressed. You are essentially pressing 3 corners of a square, and the fourth key just happens to be the OK button. Here are all the combos that press OK. *7Send, 08Send, #9Send, *4^, 05^, #6^, *1v, 08v, #3v. You will notice a pattern if you do all of these. But I do have to give my praise for durability. My phone has taken repeated slalom gate impacts, (plastic pole at 40 mph), because I keep it in my coat pocket while skiing. The only damage done is a little crack in the case.

I too, registered just so I could post on this topic. My phone takes pictures, calls people I know, people I don't know, etc. I have to say it hasn't played any of my music, but I do get to hear a recorded voice telling me "....if you want to make a call..." The only time the key lock works is when I want to answer the phone and then I have to push ok, otherwise it is locked for good. I have trouble with this no matter where I store my phone--pocket or purse, or in a case. Oh, if it's sitting flat on my computer desk it's ok. =(

Ugh, I too have registered just to reply to this thread... I have a holster as well, and am always having problems with this. Random numbers dialed, backgrounds changing, music starts playing... etc... Such a ridiculously simple fix to. Just make Menu>Settings&Tools>Phone Settings>Security>Lock Phone Now more accessible. Perhaps you could allow everyone to choose that as the option for locking the phone instead of the obviously insufficient double-ok It is incredible that this forum thread has been open so long when the fix is so simple.

Joined this forum for the sole purpose of this thread. I have an Env3 and like many others (including my wife, and son who own an LG Env3), the pocket dialing is a BIG problem which LG refuses to recognize. I carry my Env3 in a pouch on my pants belt. The Env3 is set to lock in 7 secs with"Unlock Option" set to "Press Twice". I can't tell you how many times I have pocket dialed folks, changed a phone setting or added a bogus contact entry simply by sitting
in my car or at my desk and bumping the pouch. The problem is the "OK" button isthe highest point on the phone surface and its way too easy to depress it without knowing. Like others state in this forum, the fix is quite easy it could be done in firmware updates by allowing for a unique combo of buttons. Locking the Env3 is a real pain in the ass, as you must dig deep into menus to do it. But don't hold your breathe waiting for LG to offer a simply fix. LG is a lame company when it comes to acknowledging product problems. (I own LG washer/dryer equipment, it has some quirks and LG won't acknowledge those either). Unless Barack Obama uses an Env3 and were to pocket dialyour not gonna see LG lift a finger! This will be the last LG product I ever buy.

So I just managed to butt-dial *72, and forward my incoming calls to oblivion. I didn't find out about this until my dad called my company-provided blackberry to tell me. This would have been an absolute disaster if it were an important call from someone that didn't have that alternate phone number.
LGProductPro, I can appreciate that you're swimming upstream and doing your best to get this fixed. At this point, over *one year* since the start of this thread, it appears that your developers aren't responsive to this issue. That's a huge disappointment, since this problem has already been fixed on the env2 and other similar models.

Boy, am I glad I found this thread before I bought a new battery for my env3. My phone has been powering off mysteriously, but now I know it's probably not the battery. My battery doesn't appear to have anything to do with the phone powering down. Pushing most/all of the buttons at once with my palm makes the phone lag, and often crash and power down. At this rate, my contract is liable to be up before we get a real fix for this. I love most everything about this phone, but the fact that it turns off in my pocket and I miss calls constantly seems to be a pretty big drawback to having it.

So you're aware that the issue isn't necessarily the Battery... It's the fit of the battery in the battery compartment... Looking at the combination probably won't reveal any issues, but pushing on the battery or trying to move it around can cause the phone to power down or reboot... The "Fit" Mismatch is very very slight... So I can see how having the phone in your pocket could "Torq" the phone enough to cause a momentary disconnect long enough to cause the problem.

Add me to the list. I have tried 4 different type of belt holsters for this phone (which is blue), and all have exactly the same results. Stupid of me to have spent almost $100 on a carrier that will keep my phone from changing screens, make butt calls, butt texts, turning bluetooth on, changing wallpaper pictures, entering random numbers, create text messages and save them in drafts, send non-sense text messages randomly, and shut itselt off about 5 times a day.
And for the LG Pro, while there have been 5+ pages of people listing complaints of the identical problem, I would bet for every person who took the time to find this thread, read through it, and register, there are probably a thousand who didn't. This forum was on the second page of my google search, and I only kept reading because I believed there had to be a solution to such a dramatic problem.
Needless to say I'm dissappointed that no such fix is available. The exposure from people listening into butt dialed calls is significant, missed calls from my wife because the phone shut itself off, and all the other nonsense is simply unacceptable.
This is my first LG phone, after many Motorolla products. You know how they say it is easier to keep an existing customer than get a new one? I would be very hard pressed to consider another LG product, given this MAJOR issue has been out there since the introduction of the phone, and there is still no solution. I don't mean this as a threat, but simply a statement of fact. People have options as to how they spend their money. All the other fine qualities of the enV3 (and there are many) don't offset the major issue of not being able to lock the phone down securely and easily.
I also have an iPhone 4. It is carried in the same style belt pouch as the enV3. In the 2 months I have owned it, it has never shut off or become unlocked by itself. Never once. My LG can't make it through a day without about 10 episodes of all the behaviors mentioned in many of these posts.
Unfortunately, I have almost a year left to deal with this nonsense.
I find it remarkable that a software, programming change can't be done that will simply change the locking function from the OK button, to the camera activation button. I can't believe that button would ever be randomly pressed twice because of how it is recessed. And yet that button is easily accessible when grabbing the phone.
Go tell some programmer it can't be done, and then e-mail me about an hour later, telling me how I can get his update.

Even though this is still one of my favorite phones, I agree with most of your points and I'm still trying to resolve the "Butt Dialing" Issue...
As for the rebooting issue that was rosolved a while back, it requires swapping out the phone and Battery... On some enV3s they didn't fight quite right and caused the battery connections to disconnect causing the phone to reboot. I'm not sure if your phone is in or out of warranty, but I would call Verizon support (800) 922-0204 or LG Support at (800) 793-8896 and see if they can help you out.

Hi,
This phone has become a huge problem for me since it keeps sending TXT messages for which I am paying to VZ for nothing. It has dialed many numbers, even power off by itself due to butt dialing.
I had bought holster with phone and always keep it on the rightside by my belt. I just got a call from a friend asking me why I TXTed him? One time my daughter keep calling me and could not reach, when I reached home I figured it has shutdown itself. It keeps changing my display settings etc by itself.
I am now so concerend about this "butt dialing", I am going toswitch to a differentphone at the earliest oppotunity. LG ENV3 sucks and as I see LG cares less about all this complaints for over a year so there is no point waiting for any solution.
I just registered today post it here. I do sound bitter but this phone is nothing but a problem for me.
Thanks and Good luck everyone.

I have the Canadian Telus-provided version of this phone (so the Keybo 2). With this version, there is no 'click ok twice' setting (that I can find). Front menu -> key guard only has 3 options.. Lock now, Keyboard Timer, and Help. I can only set the timer, so it is EXTREMELY easy to unlock the keyboard and start dialing.
I, too, registered just to post on this forum. You see, I carry my phone in my front pocket. Today, while playing with my 2 year old son, I guess his feet pushed some buttons. As a result, I/he inadvertently dialed 911. Yeah, not cool.
So many ways to fix this! I would love just the ok-twice option, which would help slightly. And/or have any other key stop the sequence as the original poster mentioned. Or have an option to force the code-lock easier, or automatically. But, please, do SOMETHING! This is unacceptable.

Still no hope in sight. I'm looking to switch providers and rid myself of this phone, and it looks like the Samsung Intercept at Sprint will be the winner.
In a few weeks, I'll be purchasing all new appliances for the home I'm purchasing. LG isn't even in consideration, since it's painfully clear that I should have no expectation of post-sale support if there's an issue.

I just stumbled upon this topic because I was trying to find the lock code for my enV3. The lock code is set to the last 4 digits of phone number. For the people who are having the "butt dialing" issue this may help. You can only really lock phone from the menu with the phone flipped open. Follow these steps; Flip open phone; Menu; Settings & Tools; Phone Settings; Security; Enter Phone Lock Code (Try last 4 digits of your phone number); Lock Phone Now; Close Phone. Phone is now locked and you must hit OKeither once or twice depending on your phone settings and then you must enter your 4 digit phone lock code before any dialing can take place. The 7 second locking is still in place. I'm sure most of you having problems have gotten rid of your phones by now, but those of you who still own this phone, hopefully this resolves your issues, at least to some extent.
