After formatting the SD card and connecting to my pc via a USB cord, the "Found new hardware- installation wizard" pops up asking to search for software in order to install the new device. However, there is no software and hence I choose 'cancel.' But once this option is chosen I receive a message claiming installation failed and my computer never recognizes the phone. How can this be avoided?

If you are trying to set the phone to be used as a card reader, your phone will have an option for USB Mass storage mode somewhere in the menus. That option does not require drivers. Any other kind of connectivity will require you to obtain the appropriate drivers for your phone. Check the file library.
