LG Ally Ver 8 OTA Update in progress

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Ver 8 update for the Ally is currently underway. Within the next Day or Two your Ally should prompt you to accept the Update which will bring your phone to the current level. For those of you who saw the update come through, but declined it, the Verizon Server should retry your phone within the next day or two. I don't have the Delivery Schedule it's all done by region through Verizon.... *** This is NOT an Android 2.2 update. **** This is an update to the Ally for Android 2.1

I don't have release notes for Ver 8 ... But it should be coming and I will post it when I get it... For this of you who got the other update from the updater utility, I don't have any information on it other than it contains all of the Ver 8 updates.

Unfortunately no, the Update can't be initiated on the User end... The good news is that it should retry your phone every few hours... This cycle Might be slower due to all of the updates going out right now.

I got the update about 4 am when I attempted to go to the market place. So I have had a full days use with it. Right off the bat I noticed a change to the "Think Free Office App" icon, and the addition of a new "Corporate Calendar". Also... My available system memory went from about 30megs to 85/90. And I've gone all day with a full battery. I have no errors to report. All apps seem to work fine. The patch has improved the performance of the phone.

No because you are running a V# higher than what the update contains. The updater compares the version being pushed to the version number on you phone and uses a basic greater than equal to, trigger.

I just got the update but i dont see much of a difference except they changed an icon, added another calender could of put both together they look the same, and added verizons backup assistant don"t know why google backs it up already! Does seem a little smoother and manages memory better so far! Like to know what the update had in it? It did take about 5mb of user memory away i think!

How is the V9 update flawed? I've been using it since Saturday and my phone is working better than it was before the update. And that's saying something because my phone worked perfectly before. I've yet to have a freeze up or force close in the 6 weeks i've had the phone.

I agree completely. I've had no problems since upgrading and I've not heard anyone say anything about it being flawed. Pro warned (rightfully) that it might not be fully tested and wasn't an official release, but there is no evidence there is anything wrong with it. My phone also has worked better since applying it.

Im glad you and others have had success with the v9 update. However for me it is flawed. It hasnt helped my phone and in some insyances it has hurt it. I had to do a reset to get facebook to work right again and alot of my apps wouldnt install correctly. My battery life is still crap and I still have the 50% bug. But those of you that are having success good for you Im happy for ya. As for me Im screwed since the v8 is a lower version than I have and probably wont get it. But thats my fault.

I hate to tell you this, but if you are expecting an update to fix the 50% bug, you will be waiting for a long time. The 50% bug happens on all Android phones and there's nothing LG can do about it. That one has to be fixed by Google, which supposedly they did with Android 2.2, but which Ally users may or may not be getting.

If you were around at the end of the week, you noticed a flurry of messages back and forth concerning the update. I was trying to report information in real time, to keep everyone updated. I still don't know what state Ver 9 was in (Alpha, Beta, or pre-release or Released) So I didn't want it installed on the phones in the field... You can't undo an Update. So I tried to approach it with extreme Caution until I felt comfortable with it.

Long answer, Sorry. But as it now stands, Ver 9 is okay, it's just a Variation of Ver 8. Those of us who installed it will be fine.

If you would post any Ver 9 related comments or issues to the Forum, I'll pass them on to Development

So far with Ver 8, I'm seeing a slightly "snappier" response from the phone. Nothing that's making me say "wow", but in general the phone seems a bit more responsive and it is noticable. One issue I'm not liking is the Cell Standy - Time without signal percentage I'm experiencing after the update this AM. Already posted on this in another thread and I know you're aware LG Pro. My battery is definitely taking a hit today as I'm seeing decreased life from my normal day-to-day use I experienced before the update. Can't pinpoint the update as the culprit, but don't know what else would be causing it. Warren

The Update should be helping the Battery life not hurting... I'd give it a day or so and see how it goes... We can also try the "Old and Tired" troubleshooting step of pulling the Battery for a minute or so and then replacing it. This does a Soft reset and forces the phone to reacquire the Cell Towers.

Let me know how it goes!

Welcome to the Forum! Are you referring to the "Time without Signal" topic that's been brought up? When you go to Settings and then Battery Use and select Call Standby, it will display a window Showing how long the phone has been on and the percentage of time the Phone is without a signal. I have a associate who has the Droid-X and we compared this value and it's the same on his Motorola... So I'm not sure what it's relevance and since both of the phones work fine I don't think it's an issue.

Sorry if this isn't what you are referring to.

The correlation is that both phones are running 2.1. It is a well documented issue with Version 2.1 of the Android OS. It has been fixed in 2.2

The update really didnt solve anything just brought on new problems and some more bloatware in my eyes! My time without a signal is still the same, useing 25% of the battery in 1 and a half hours after i unplug it and didnt hardly use it btw, without a signal was at 85% then, it started going down to 36% before it died 12 hours later! Plus i've noticed my emails are like 10-20 minutes late sometimes so who knows if i'm missing phone calls as well as texts messages. I don't really care about the new calender as I'm old school i write it down in an appointment book but I need my email on time to do that! Just what i noticed so far! Hopefuly it gets better soon as I like the phone or I'm going back to my trusty old BB at least i got my emails on time and did'nt have to charge it twice daily!

Well, the Corporate Calendar was "iffy" ... you can't count on it to display all events all of the time ... and now my email has stopped working. Every time I try to open an email the application/process shows an error and stops ... so, V8 has made my phone useless to me other than phone calls ... which I could do with any old phone ... nice update ...

Pulled the battery last evening for a few minutes. I have noticed that since the update forced the install of Backup Assistant, this app runs nearly all the time (for syncing I assume). We really should have a way to uninstall this - especially those of us who are using our Google account for contacts, etc. I've been running pretty good without a task killer, but after manually killing BA, it persists to keep running ALL day. I'm not sure what it's doing exactly when it's running, but if it's contributing to the decline in battery life, not good. Warren

Just to add to my frustration over this latest update from Verizon, I attempted to access the Market about 10 minutes ago. I got another program/process error indicating that is would be stopped. Then, market opened up and proceeded as one would expect. I never had a single problem with my Ally prior to this last update ... I wish that I could remove it until things are stable ... Next time I'll press "later" and see what happens on the forums before I install an update!

You can check the version of software you have installed on your phone by going to Settings>> and then at the bottom of the list choose "About Phone" Next scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll see a number like "VS740ZV6" the last digit tells you what version you are running. If the last characters are "V8" then you have version 8.

If you haven't received the update, it should happen anytime... Verizon is delivering by Region.

Are you still having issues access the Market? This is the first report of this I've had.... I'll report it. What have you tried to see if you can resolve it? Just wondering what steps have been tried.

Should everyone receive this V8 update?

Posted By Tnnisace on 20 Jul 2010 13:29 PM: Sorry-I am a new Ally user. Can someone explain what the 50% bug is please?

Welcome to the Forum! Are you referring to the "Time without Signal" topic that's been brought up? When you go to Settings and then Battery Use and select Call Standby, it will display a window Showing how long the phone has been on and the percentage of time the Phone is without a signal. I have a associate who has the Droid-X and we compared this value and it's the same on his Motorola... So I'm not sure what it's relevance and since both of the phones work fine I don't think it's an issue.

Sorry if this isn't what you are referring to.

I think everyone is referring to that as the "50% bug". And you bet it affects battery life like CRAZY!

Airplane mode on before a reboot (power off and power on), then airplane mode off once you're booted back up. Airplane mode before a reboot seems to do the trick every time so definitely not a software bug, probably just a moron that wrote a startup script that enables the radio but looks for more than one type of signal (cdma + gsm), so your phone consistently looks for a different signal at all times (never finding one) wasting battery while still functioning on CDMA.

Also, LG Product Pro, could you please inform us if there is a way to prevent specific services from starting at boot? It seems as though any "built in" widget you try (and inevitably don't like and remove from your home screen), the service STILL starts at boot?! So anytime you power off and back on your phone there you have it, the service is running! This is my main gripe with the phone, and now that Verizon Backup Assist (trash) is bundled with the OS in the V8 update and since I already know this is terrible software I never configured it. But guess what, yet another service running at startup. Looks like they fixed all the broke stuff with the factory load however created more clutter with this.

It will be way more beneficial to let us know how to prevent things from starting at boot, as we all know from too many things running at startup in MS Windows, it slows down performance DRAMATICALLY and makes the hardware seem like garbage when it really isn't.

The only problem I've had with accessing the market is ONE time when I got a "force close" then it proceeded to work as expected ... it was a one time thing. My big problems are that I can not open any emails from Exchange even though they are in the list of emails on the phone ... and of course Corporate Calendar does not do much of anything ...

So you're looking for something like a "Startup Manager" for Android? I would download it as well. Unfortunately I don't know of one and "i'm not sure how effective it would be since the start up apps appear to be pretty persistent by relaunching when they are killed. I have an associate with a Droid-X and looking at it there are also a ton of Apps that launch at startup as well... Including Backup assistant. So this must be a Verizon and Android 2.1 thing to load the startup apps they want running. However the memory is a little more limited on the Ally so it could be frustrating to have things installed and or launched if you Can't take advantage of there features.

I'm having a heck of a time with the OTA 8 update. Yesterday the process started, the phone rebooted, the android appeared on the screen with a progress bar, the phone rebooted, and nothing happened. The software version did not change, there is no corporate calendar, no backup program, etc. Never got offered the update again. Called Verizon customer service and the rep got a LG tech on the phone. After talking with the LG tech and reading out everything in the settings section of my phone, the LG tech confimred that my phone had not been updated - however, Settings/Abount phone/System Updates said there were no updates available for my phone, so both the LG tech and Verizon support person said there was nothing I could do other than return the phone and have Verizon order me another one - what a HUGE bummer. If I have to return my phone I'll be tempted to get a phone with a chance of getting Android 2.2 - but I really like the Ally, and before I did something drastic I was wondering if someone from LG watching this thread might find a copy of the OTA8 file (or even OTA9) and let me try installing it myself (like the guys in the "Ally v9 Firmware Update" thread did when it was available)? I've got both the Windows and the Linux Android developer's kits already installed and working (I cross complied and installed my first working Android "C" program last week), so I think I'm technically competent to handle the update process. Anyone out there with a copy of the update file I can try installing?

Pro is the Corporate Calendar going to get fixed anytime soon? It would be great if it would work not just for me but i'm sure other folks would like that. I had to buid a virtual machine with XP running Google calendar sync so that I can get my calendar updates but I don't think everyone has those kind of resources available to them.

Ouch, this is a first. The update is 'Pushed' to your phone, there isn't a way to 'request' the update. So going to SETTINGS>> About phone>> System Update, won't work, in this case. The update is strictly Over the Air, so there isn't an update file I could send out to you either. I would think that if your phone is still reporting V6 (The Original Ver) that the Verizon's update server should try again. If I understand correctly this could be a couple of days before it retries you.

What steps did the Verizon Tech walk you thru? I don't want to make you do additional work, but if it was my phone, this is what I would try... I don't know if this will help but if you would like you can try this.

    * Download and install 'Mybackup pro' (Trial version) or any other good back up utility

    * Backup your data and Applications with this app

    * Do a Hard Reset on the phone... THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING back to Factory defaults.

    * I would then do a Restore which should make your phone look just like before the Reset.

    * I would then wait a day or so to see if the Server finds that you don't have the update and prompts you again.

Don't try this if you already have done it with the Verizon Tech...

Let me know how it goes.

    Android system-55%

    Cell standby-24%

    Phone idle-18%

But my time without signal is down to 27% now...so I don't know, but what does all this mean? Is my battery being drained terribly or is this fairly standard for the Ally and no worries?

As far as I can tell you're fine....

55% of the Battery is The Android OS is busy doing File managment or some OS related activities

24% of the Battery is Cell Stand By - searching for Cell Signal

18% of the Battery is being used doing nothing just sitting idle

    3% for Voice calls

    2% for the Display.

I couldn't disagree more. My Ally lasts 2 days casual-aggressive use if I do the Airplane mode trick. If I boot without it in airplane mode with time without signal constantly at 50% it lasts 4-5 hours (less with aggressive Pandora / surfing) and it won't even charge the phone when plugged in if I have navigation running, I would say that its probably something to worry about.

Thanks for the reply - I can't image that my phone is really busted as it is working very well for me. The Verizon tech said that their servers are not pushing the update, only the LG servers. The LG tech seemed to confirm this. It seem like the upgrade would HAVE to come via the Verizon servers but maybe I got a couple of techs that: a) Didn't really know b) Didn't really care OR c) Didn't think the customer would bother to follow up on their info -- a moot point-but it felt good to grouse a bit Just an FYI - Before I attempted the OTA update, I did check the SETTINGS>> About phone>> System Update and it did show an update available (but I did not initiate the update that way - I waited until the popup asked again). I don't know if Verizon will let me keep the existing memory card so I was going to backup everything before I took the phone in anyway. I think your idea of doing a factory reset and then a restore is a good one, and probably the safest route, so I'll try that first. A kind soul found a copy of the V9 file, and I was going to see if I could figure out how to unpack/merge/replace the OS via that file. I assume it will take me a couple of days to decypher what is going on in the V9 file, so that should give the backed up/reset/restored phone a chance to get another shot at the update OTA. Either way I'll drop a note back on this forum with my success or failure. Thanks again for your suggestions.

Sorry you're getting mixed messages... I'll dig into this a little deeper on Monday.

Ver 9 File?? Interesting. I'm not sure it's worth the trouble to try and manually install the update... So you're saying that your phone did prompt you again and this time it failed as well? If your phone failed twice to update I would exchange it and I would think Verizon would allow you to keep your MicroSD card and just swap it with a the new one.

    Let us know what happens.

As for the info on your SDCard just download and install an imaging program and image the SDCard. Verizon gets a little "interesting" when it comes to returning bad phones. I would honestly be surprised if they allowed you to do the swap that Pro described.

I am wondering if someone would be so kind as to more fully explain this whole "time on standby" issue? I am wondering please: 1. If having to do airplane mode trick to "fix" this issue should not be the way to handle this as it really is a "band aid" fix. 2. If it is a unacceptable defect of the phone and should be exchanged at the store (I am still within my 30 days). 3. If this is a simple "quirk" of the Ally and should not interfere with the general functioning of the phone-which I really seem to overall not be having major issues-a freeze here or there but otherwise been OK. 4. If I should be kicking myself because I switched (breaking my contract) from ATT and dropped my Blackberry for this. Thank you to anyone who can clear this up.

    1. it's a band aid 2. All Android 2.1 phones will have it to 1 degree or another. 3. It makes the Battery drain a little bit quicker. Aside from that it causes no other issues. 4. For getting away from a BB absolutely not. For getting the Ally....Well time will only tell on that one. It really needs 2.2 or at least half the functionality of 2.2 backported to fix bugs. Basically when you check you battery use (settings->About Phone->Battery Use). You will see "Cell Standby" click on that and you will see "Time Without Signal". The Android 2.1 OS has a bug that will cause that percentage to be very high (97-98% has been reported). It's all from a little bit of bad code for when the Cell Radio starts up. Having a high Time Without Signal percentage will drain you battery pretty quick because the phone is thinking it's in roaming so it boots power levels to the ant. in order to try to get a better signal.

I really like the Ally and have not had reason enough to return it. I realize ALL mobile phones have their issues and "quirks". This doesn't seem to be a terrible one thankfully.

Thanks to everyone that looked into this issue for me. Just a couple of notes on where I'm at now: 1) I was unsuccessful at manually installing v9. 2) Wiping the phone and waiting for an update did not work - if I had to speculate, I would say that LG/Verizon has the serial number of my phone stored in some "updated" database as having completed the download and install, and would never offer my phone the chance for this update again. 3) Lucky for me Death2All110 in the adroidforums.com wrote out concise instructions on how to manually install any version of the software if you can get hold of the proper .cab file. His instructions can be found at: http://androidforums.com/lg-ally/1245... and I intend to give them a try later tonight.

I can check on the OTA Update and see how we can get around it... I would think that it checks the version you are running and will see that you are 'Down Level' and prompt for an upgrade, but I'll look.

Good Luck with manually installing the update. Let us know how it works out.

I've been following travel_rob's posts for a few days now because I had the same problem... Got offered the update last week (Monday or Tuesday, I think), accepted, seemingly went through the process, rebooted, and I still had v6. It did seem to go through the install rather quickly, which I was initially surprised at (and then not so much once I realized it hadn't installed). I waited until just yesterday (Sunday), and never got re-offered. So, I went ahead with Pro's suggestion regarding the reset. Backed up everything with Titanium, did a full factory reset, reactivated the phone, and within maybe 10-15min I was offered the update again (before I could even go through the rooting process in order to restore with Titanium). Not sure if the reactivation reset my database entry or what. Anyway, once again I accepted it, and the same exact thing happened... i.e. still v6. I waited another hour or so, but never got another offer, so I just went ahead and restored my phone to it's previous state (the whole process took a while, so I haven't gone through it again, nor do I really want to). Since I had *nothing* installed on my phone this second time around, I'm pretty sure that it had nothing to do with any "bad apps". However, the one thing in common both times was that I had my phone plugged into my laptop via the USB cable (it's my typical recharge method, and I keep it plugged in whenever I'm at my laptop). Is it possible that this has something to do with it? The USB connection interfering with the upgrade? Has anyone here successfully upgraded while USB connected?

I doubt it, however I know on some of the other LG Phones that the USB connection seems to interfere with the Cell Data transmissions. Unfortunately I don't know how to prompt the OTA update to contact your phone again so we can try it...

Well, I'll give it a couple days and see if I get notified again, otherwise I might go ahead with the reset method again. Thanks.

Yeah, I saw that... And provided those are the actual final release cab's, I might go that route as well.

Pro, Can you talk your guys into putting the V8 update back up on the manual updater. I think it would solve the issue for the people not getting it OTA.

If you are not getting the OTA notice Do a hard reset and then once it reboots open dialer and put in *#*#checkin#*#* (*#*#2433546#*#*). That should do a force check for the update.

Is there a list of these *#*# sequences anywhere? I'm intrigued by their potential.

Good Idea! Let me run it past some people and see what they say.

I'm sure there is somewhere prolly in the man pages of the SDK. I happen to get that one from death2all110 over at androidforums.com
