LG Thrill issue with calling 911 emergency while keypad is locked
I have an LG Thrill and it has called 911 emergency call 10 times in less than two weeks, while the keypad was locked and the phone was in my pocket. I have tried removing the icon or disable the emergency call. I have contacted my service provider and was referred to the phone manufacturer. I need this issue resolved.

Hi Terra,
First off, we can not disable the emergency calling. Your carrier shouldn't have pointed fingers or help that way. It is a mandatory requirement.
But I am concerned about the auto dialing and want to help. The emergency dial is still a two step process and the place to press is in different locations so you must really be getting lucky with the phone. Does the device only do this in your pocket? If so, I think the best course would be to carry it a different way or have the screen facing away from your body perhaps?
Also, just to get the software out of the way, have you updated your device lately? Is it on Gingerbread? -

Terra,
Make sure before putting the phone in your pocket or purse, that you turn the screen off first. Then the only thing that should "wake" it without an incoming call, would be pressing the power button. At least that's how I think it's supposed to work.
So, if you are turning off the display, something must be pressing the power button. Maybe a better gel or other case that makes the button more recessed would help you. -

It only happens on the pattern unlock I believe.
They simply need to remove the 911 pre-dial to resolve the issue, or make it slide to unlock on the bottom to access the emergency dial...but they don't think its an issue.
The easiest way to replicate is:
1.enable pattern lock
2. lock phone
3. receive txt (the screen will automatically light up and allow input)
4. click any part of the bottom 1/8th of the phone twice consecutively.
TADA Pocket dialed 911!!! -

This is a serious problem! False calls to 911 are not taken lightly. And despite what you say false calls do happen easily with this design. Go back to Engineering and get them to fix the design. I disagree about it being mandatory. Who is making it mandatory? Your marketing department? That is not mandatory!
This phone can not be placed in a purse or pocket without it starting its self up and making calls, sending messages, changing settings, etc. Engineering needs to design a better locking system! BTW I am an EE, While there are many good design features in this phone, this is a design feature that is a problem. Please take us seriously, improve the phone and fix this.- view 2 more comments

Yes, you should be able to make your phone your own. But all the issues it creates with carriers and OEM's trying to help troubleshoot and define warranty issues make that a no go in the U.S. for the most part.
That's why the rooting and rom'ing community on Android devices is so strong. -

SOLUTION: A simple slide to unlock on the bottom 10th of the screen that says "emergency call", then the next screen has 911 predialed and a green button that says call in green. (A double-click should not function as an emergency call EVER!)
If you want I'll code it for you! It's not that big of a deal, just bake it into the OFW please!
And fix the bloody baseband issue that is causing time sync issues and ghost calls...I'm out good money because of them. -

I thought I'd mention that one solution to this problem is an app lock. It is not as desirable as a screen lock, but app locks do not have the "mandatory" 911 button. (I wonder if they got the memo?).

I'm not sure how the phone wakens itself without physically pressing the power button.

Also power button is not recessed, it is possible for it to be depressed against a flat surface. In fact I have tested it and it depresses quite easily without a finger. Set the phone on the end with the power button and tilt slightly. At a few degrees of tilt the power button is very sensitive to pressure. My iPhone had a recessed power button. It could not be depressed on a flat surface at any position. I never had a problem with the iPhone. (And I hate to say that! To me Apple has become the Big Brother they showed in their 1984 commercial.)

OK, I understand that point. Thanks.
I have a 911 button on my device's unlock screen, but you must first slide up to answer an incomming call. Is that not how your device works?
I admit I am not sure what happens for SMS Text messages; I don't have a plan for those, and use Whatsapp instead. -

Actually I had a case on the iPhone. You're right, Stef7, that is another solution to most unwanted activations. But the 911 button is still a big problem!
However, I still have a problem when calls come in. The phone goes directly to the answer screen, it is very difficult to remove it from my pocket without something touching the screen and possibly rejecting the call. If I recall correctly, I still had to slide the unlock on the iPhone. And the needed slide was at 90 degrees to the direction the phone was moving when I took it from my pocket. It took more than a simple touch to reject a call. -

I don't know. In your posiition, maybe I would try a replacement launcher (I use Holo) to see if that changes the behavior of the phone. My phone when an incomming call comes in requires a slide up to unlock gesture BEFORE the 911 button is visible. I don't know why that isn't the case on your phone.
Yeah, that would / could be a problem. -

Pocket dialed 911 about 6 times in the past 30days. Hope you continue to jeopardize people's lives more and more with your shameful designs/software, and entire lack of software updates, especially those that don't break your phones.

That has a negative impact on the emergency response systems. That's a mandatory break/fix isn't it? LG should post an applications level fix on their support site until a push is prepared or flat out replace the devices for that one issue alone.

The Thrill may be atop the priority list of much needed fixes.

The problem is solved! They even sent a text to all ATT customers. So apparently it's been in AT&T's hands...probably for a few months.
Anyways, still not happy that it took that long to resolve a major issue...but I no longer live in fear...I received 4 phone calls, instead of my average 1. :) and no 911 ghost calls yet either.-
It is unfortunate that it took quite some time for the update to arrive but on the bright side, it seems to be working well with your Thrill and hey, better late than never!
