I keep getting "Memory Full, Not enough phone storage space" messages on my Optimus V when it shows I have 17.75MB free for phone memory. I have cleared cache and still get the message just trying to edit a contact. I am not even adding anything to the contact. Just changing one letter of the last name. This is pretty ridiculous. This is a nice phone, but these phone memory issues are a real problem. What is wrong with the memory on the phone and how can I fix it? I have moved most apps to the SD card. But even so, it says I have 17.75MB free but cannot even edit a single contact?

Just remember this when someone asks you to sign a 2-year contract for a phone. If your Optimus V wasn't a Prepaid phone, could you imagine being stuck with it for 2 years, having to constantly delete everything you actively use, so that you're only left with a phone that dials in and out, and can't even receive text messages because space is full?
That update has not solved any of the memory problems. We need a real solution.
LG baby, the best America has to offer.

We checked Facebook cache, and it consuming about 67MB!!!! Using the clear Cache/Data, (Manage Application)on this app., gained us about 67MB.
Asking a question: anyone have suggestions regarding "delete all" trash; I have 1000 trash e-mails to get rid of. So far only option has been to delete one by one! (this is in re@ to the alternate e-mail program, not the g-mail).

I had been having intermittent memery low issues for about 5 months. Nothing horribly awful- I would just delete old texts, pictures, etc and the memory low message would go away. Two days ago I downloaded the software update per the LG Moderator's suggestion on this forum. Maybe now my phone is more safe- since I think it was a security update but it made my memory issue so much worse. After downloading (and then following all of the instructions) I have had HUGE memory issues- a constant low memory message and then a no memory message despite my usual deleting of pictures, texts etc. I showed a friend who works with cell phones my phone's memory capacity and he actually started laughing. Does LG have any other fixes for this issue? This lack of memory seems like a glaring oversight. I'm starting to think that my next phone will definitely NOT be an LG...

Humm, was it the software update that's seems to be the source of the low memory issues, or is it "Android Assistant"? If it's Android Assistant I'd uninstall it! It's worked great for me, but don't keep it if it's causing issues.

If you've installed the update, and you're seeing the low memory messages, I'd recommend doing a Master Reset on the phone. One shouldn't be required, but I think it's a good idea... The contents of your SD Card should be safe. So that means your photos and music shouldn't be touched. However all of your downloaded apps and accounts will need to be reinstalled... Make sure you backup your contacts first.

The phone is near unsable after the update. The "low on space" icon is now permanent fixture. Text messages are getting rejected and I cannot add new contacts. On the "Running services" tab, the message at the bottom sez;
Other: 74MB in 6 Avail: 231MB+70MB in 16.
I have cleared all the caches and data I can get away with.

As per Android Assistant I have 211.82MB of RAM free and 13.48 of Phone Space(ROM). And yet text messages
are being rejected because of inadequate memory. This started after the update. The exact error mesage is:
Text message memory full. Incoming message rejected due to full...

Aprox how many text messages do you have on the phone? Have you tried backing up the phone and doing a Master Reset? An update shouldn't require you to reset, but I have found that in a lot of cases it has helped.

I've been having this same problem since I bought my phone about a year ago. I've done multiple "Master Resets" which does temporarily solve the problem, but after a few weeks to about 2 months of normal use, I encounter the exact same issues. I've done the same as everyone else, moved what apps i can to SD, deleted any apps i don't use or don't need, and cleared everything i can. Nothing helps.
This is what my phone looks like now that has brought me to this forum: I had about 21MB of internal memory, went to market to install the new angry birds space game, which i realized shortly after was a meg or 2 larger than what i had available.... Here's the funny part. It downloads 100%, goes to install, and I get the message "Cannot install to storage device". Ok, so the app failed to install, I get that. But now when I check my available memory, i have 1MB available!!! Where did this come from? I cannot find anything on the phone that shows where this game tried to download to, and no idea how to free up the memory it just used!
Maybe this could possibly help find the culprit of the memory issues. It seems even a failed download/install of an app uses internal phone storage space, and does not free it up regardless of if the app fails/succeeds in installing.
I'm quite upset that I now have to do ANOTHER (about my 5th in almost a year) reset of my phone just to be able to text people again.
LG, I do not mean to sound rude, but telling us to "Do a master reset of your phone, although you shouldn't have to" is not an acceptable answer to this problem. I am pretty tech savy myself with computers and phones, and this issue is beyond even me to solve. I think the Optimus V community deserves much more than being told the exact same answer every few months, which obviously isn't fixing anyone's problem.
Please quit delaying, and either fix what was broken, and help out the people who PAY to keep your companies running, otherwise you will find us all switching to a different phone maker/carrier.

1There was a release that happened mid March... Other than that, I no longer have access to update information so I don't know whats coming.
I apologize for not having any additional information to share... I will post any news that I get.-
How does one obtain that release? Is it just an update that automatically is sent to your phone? Or do you have to actively get it from somewhere?

Try plugging the phone into computer via USB cord it may auto find a firmware update

I got this phone with the intent of activating it in place of my Cyclops phone. But the memory issue has put me off. Or rather the lack of a solution to the memory issue. This is like Apple forums: Millions of people have the problem, no one has any idea or interest in solving it.

FWIW: I had a Motorola Triumph running Froyo on VMUSA. It had this nasty habit of collecting log files that kept increasing in size in internal memory. Eventually, the only thing that could be done to alleviate the issue was perform a FDR (Factory Data Reset).
Sounds familiar.
There was a way to root the device, use a root-based file manager, navigate to the /data directory of the device and explicitly remove the .log files.
There was even a post somewhere else on the web (Google) on how you could change the default attributes of that directory to get the problem to go away. I am not sure of the effectiveness of that.
The problem with the non-FDR measures is that you can damage your device... at the very least, void your warranty. The problem with the FDR is, you loose personal information / configuration / preferences, etc. -

Well I did install that update but it doesn't appear it had anything to do with the memory issue.
In fact less than 24 hours after the install I was getting the low storage space warning. I had to clear my browsers cache to continue. -
-
@mjj, that release was to patch for a security problem. it wasn't to take the phone to Gingerbread or purposefully address the problem you are experiencing.
I predict you will continue to have to do clearing, probably more and more frequently, and at some point, there will be nothing more you can do, but the obligatory FDR... unless LG provides a mechanism to delete .extremely large .alog files which may be amassing in the \data directory.
I think this is the exact same shortcoming I and many more experienced on the Motorola Triumph on Froyo on the VMUSA network. Of course, it could be something different, but the observables are the same.
I am not recommending you root your phone, but if someone from LG could walk you through it safely, you could determine if the issue is essentially the same. Or maybe you could ask if you could send them your phone for a replacement while they look into it more closely. -
-
worst case scenario, if you need to update a contact, you should be able to do it through gmail or whatever you sync your contacts with.

Same problem here for the last year and two different Optimus One phone.
POS phone and LG do not stand up for what a POS they sold.
They should offer a replacment phone that would at least allow us to do what a "smartphone" is intended to do...
Come on LG !!!!! Be the company you claim you are and admit your flaw with this POS. Give us all a good phone in exchange. I don't know. Maybe a optimus BLACK with 2 Gig of internal memory so we don't have this memory issue over and over again !!!!
I seriously considering moving to an iphone like my girlfriend keep bugging me about. (16gig of internal memory and NO low memory issue)
Sad part is. I called the LG tech support line and they told me they NEVER heard of such an issue with my phone model... LOL !!!!
Just my 2 cent

This is a somewhat complicated subject and a common limitation an many different Android devices, not just the Optimus. Unfortunately the budget series of Android phones the reason they are less expensive is because they have lower hardware specs including less memory. So that unfortunately means it's easy to run out of memory and you have to take steps to resolve that.
1) Move apps to SD either in settings or with an app such as "Apps 2 SD"
2) Delete SMS Text messages after you read them (especially photos or videos)
3) Empty Browser history and cache
4) Do not install multiple apps that have background services running (this is a big one)
5) Delete ALL apps that you don't use
6) Store ALL media files on SD
7) Turn off all widgets on the home screen
You might also check out an app such as LauncherPro to help tweak settings and what is loaded into memory. There are also some really good youtube videos out there covering this subject if you search for "android low memory problems"
Frustrating, I know, but stay positive...there are solutions out there to help you with this limitation of the phone. My best advice (don't hate me for saying this please) is next time you are able to buy a phone don't skimp on hardware...it might cost another $200 but in the long run you'll be happy you spent the money up front. It's exactly like a computer, a low end computer is going to have many limitations, a high end computer is going to last you a few years before you feel its age.
Please post back what is working for you to resolve your low memory situation and we'll compile all the suggestions and make a How Do I document out of them. -
-
In my opinion a phone costing more than $100 should perform well, regardless of the software it runs.
1) there are several apps that you aren't allowed to move to the SD card.
3) hugely inconvenient. It's nice having a cache and history to make browsing quicker.
4) and how would we know which ones have background services?
5) would be nice but the phone comes with apps that you aren't allowed to delete.
These aren't solutions. The phone isn't operating right. When I first got it there were no storage issues. But gradually the storage space kept getting smaller and smaller. Some have suggested that the memory doesn't always get "released" by apps when they aren't running. Or that deleted apps still use up memory.
Again, I just expect a +$100 phone to work well.-
You would have to research each app you use to find out if it runs in the background, as far as I know there is not published comprehensive list to detail each app and if it runs in the background or not. A single poorly written app could be enough to cause memory issues if the developer did not spend the time to optimize and test the app.
If it were me, I would do a full reset on my phone and wipe it clean to start fresh again and I would ONLY install what I absolutely needed on the phone. And I would install each app, test for at least a day before installing the next app to figure out if any of my apps are the culprit. That is the best solution to this limitation.
If that didn't resolve it, it is an indication that you are becoming a power user of Android and you need a higher spec phone to handle your needs. The Optimus is a great phone if you can work within it's limitations, but if you cannot work within its limitations then you should consider an upgrade. I would look into how much $ you could get off ebay for the phone and factor that into what it would cost to upgrade. It's amazing how powerful phones have become in the past year. Virgin is a no-contract carrier which means you must pay full price for a phone. To give you an example many high end phones are about $300-$500 if you purchase them without a contract. But, there are plenty of second hand high end phones out there for sale at much lower prices, and you could find many unlocked phones that Virgin does not even sell to broaden your options.
Ugh, I hate sounding like a salesman...I'm not, I'm just trying to give you all the options so you can be happy with what's in your pocket. Best of luck to you! -

Here's an example:
I get the warning that text messages are full so I need to delete some before I may receive the incoming text. So I go ahead and delete a few threads amounting to say about 20 text messages. Then the phone still thinks the text messages are full even though there's only 1 text for me to receive. How can this be? -
-
mjj, in my experience, most apps are moveable to the SD card. I use a program called Advanced Task Manager, but you can use Menu | Settings | Applications | Manage Applications. If moving something to the SD card fails, try it again. Usually, the second time works.
There are programs like MyPhoneExplorer from the Market that will let you save your SMS content on your PC. Then you could delete all your threads. After deleting stuff, try fully shutting down the phone, or restarting it.
FWIW: I think Froyo memory management isn't the greatest. I experienced the same issues you are experiencing on VMUSA on a Samsung Intercept and a Motorola Triumph, both running Froyo. -

Please follow the advice in our How Do I article for troubleshooting low memory on Android. http://www.lgforum.com/how_do_is/trou...

Yeah this phone is terrible.
So I'm getting this "text message memory full" message so I'm not receiving any text. I deleted 15 text (text folder is totally empty), I have deleted 10 photos and I've deleted my browsers cache. I then turned my phone off and on. Some how this still hasn't given me enough space for one text.
LG doesn't care about the horrible quality of this phone. It probably is a small percentage of their business. They certainly don't care about the Virgin Mobile crowd, again probably a very small percentage of their business.
The "troubleshoot" advice is a ridiculous expectation for customers. -
-
Hi mjj!
This is a common limitation of the Optimus line and many other budget Android phones, the are very limited on memory...hence the reason they are 1/2 the price of the high end phones.
But!! I have just the thing you need...a how do I article with all kinds of great tips to manage memory. :-)
http://www.lgforum.com/how_do_is/trou... -
-
Hah! Guess I should have finished reading before replying trying to go too fast so I can get back to the weekend.
I know many don't like the idea of having to manage or troubleshoot their phone but that's just the way it is with smartphones. They are mini computers and as such you must do housekeeping to keep them running well. The more "stuff" you load onto them the worse they will perform and the faster your battery drains. The best way to prevent this is always buying a high end phone that is capable of handling a lot more...just like a PC the better the specs the longer you will be happy with it before craving for an upgrade. Obviously this may not be an option currently but in the future keep it in mind.
The how do I article has everything you need to manage your memory. If you are at a point that you hate your phone then I suggest you do a master reset to start at the very beginning with a clean slate and be vigilant about what you load back onto the phone. Only load what you "need" and put as much as possible onto the SD card. And stay away from home screen widgets!
Hope this helps! -

in my phone i see .trash is the most memory taken. how do you remove the trash? i'm guessing if you dump apps and pics etc out your phone, it still stores in trash.
-
-
Interesting that you have this folder. How did you come across it and how much memory is it actually taking up? I'm curious to know if this is a Windows file remnant from plugging in your phone for Mass Storage and deleting something off of there.
Either way, I find that using Astro File Manager, available in Google Play, has no problem deleting folders and files as long as it doesn't require root access.
Please give it a try. -
